エレクトリック期前の作品で私が一番よく聴くのは実はこれ！iPodにも入れてます。
アコースティックなジャズって「ステレオででかい音で聴かないと気持ちよくない」みたいなイメージがありますが、これはたぶんAMラジオで聴いても盛り上がれます。
なぜなら、とにかくこのライヴ盤ではマイルスが吹きまくっていて（！）最高にかっちょいいのです。
録音は1964年、メンバー的には黄金クインテットのウェインショーター加入前でSaxはジョージコールマン、こちらも熱演しています。

1964年2月12日、ニューヨーク、フィルハーモニック・ホールでのライヴ録音。5ヶ月後の1964年7月、日本で行われた『世界ジョズ・フェスティバル』において日本のファンはマイルス・デイビス･クインテットを初めて生で聴くことになる。そしてこのクインテットを完成させるウェイン・ショーターの参加は1964年9月15日である。

同日にアルバム『マイ・ファニー・ヴァレンタイン』も収録しているが、あちらのマイルスは『All Of You』以外フルーゲル・ホーン、そしてバラードが展開している。こちらはマイルスの設定したテンポが異様に速く、喧嘩腰に近い。その中を切り裂くようにマイルスのペットが止めどなく楔を打ち続けるスゴイ演奏になっていて、圧倒的にこちらの演奏に惹きつけられる。特に『ウォーキン』がスゴイ!!!

村上春樹・和田誠の名著『ポートレイト・イン・ジャズ』の中のマイルス・デイビスの紹介の中で特にこのアルバムを取り上げている。この素晴らしい文章を機会があれば是非とも読まれることをお勧めしたい。
