1955年10月27日、1956年6月5日・9月10日、ニューヨーク、コロンビア799セブンス・アベニューおよび30thストリート・スタジオで録音。

本作はマイルスのコロンビアにおけるデビュー・アルバムである。タイトル曲はご存知喧嘩仲間のセロニアス・モンクの曲だが、ギル・エヴァンスがアレンジしたようだ。コルトレーンがテーマのバックで吹くメロディは本来オーケストラのために書いたものだったのをいつものようにぶらりギルのアパートにやって来て勝手に雑誌を読んだり飲み物を飲んだりしていたマイルスが聴き覚え、自分のレコーディングに使っていいかを尋ね、許可をもらったそうだが譜面は渡さなかったそうだ。しかし、その内容をマイルスは正確に覚えていて、マイルスとコルトレーンの2管編成に直して吹き込んだのだ。

閑話休題。本作そして『Kind Of Blue』はマイルスのアルバムの中で有名評論家諸兄によって代表作としてあげられ、いまだにマイルスのアルバムの中でトップ・セールスを記録しているようだ。ジャズ評論家は各ミュージシャンから3枚くらいずつアルバムを選びだして、『決定盤ジャズ百選』みたいな本を出しているが、その際には本作と『Kind Of Blue』は必ず入ってくる。しかしながら、そんな聴き方・選び方はマイルスの場合2つの意味で間違っているとぼくは思う。

1.マイルスのような多作かつ偉大なミュージシャンの数枚のアルバムで他のミュージシャンのように理解かつ楽しめる分けがない。
2.マイルスほど最初の『クールの誕生』から遺作『doo-bop』まで変貌を続けたミュージシャンはいない。それを数枚のアルバムで知ることなど不可能だ。

プレスティッジでのマラソン・セッションで録音された4部作や渾沌に満ちたジャズ・ファンクの『ビッチズ・フリュー』、最晩年のマイケル・ジャクソンの『ヒューマン・ネーチャー』の演奏を聴かずしてマイルスを理解し、その偉大な音楽を楽しむことなどできません。それは人生の一番楽しい部分を放棄していることでもあるとぼくは思うのだがいかがだろう。
