１曲目に入る前、司会者による二人の紹介（英語）の後、ベースのチューニングがあるが、まずこれが最高。ピアノがさらりとチューニング用の音を出すと、ベースも高い音（ハーモニクス/フラジオレット）を出して各弦の音の高さを確認し、最後に全部の弦をアルペジオで弾いてみせる。これら一連のチューニングのやり方が素晴らしい。実力があるので自然に聞こえるし、チューニングだけでも音楽的に聴こえる。

チューニングの後の最初の曲は「エルザ」。

エヴァンスの奏でるテーマに、最初からゴメスのベースが寄り添い、合いの手を入れてメロディーを膨らませる。効果的に唸るような音を出すのも、音を長く伸ばしたり、スタッカート風に短くするのも自由自在である。ここぞというタイミングでポ・ポーンと魅力的な音を繰り出す。

「エルザ」ではアルコ奏法も長く聴くことが出来る。ゴメスのように軽快に弓を使って長いソロ（ほとんど３連符）が取れるベース奏者は珍しい。
この曲の最後の和音の直前で高い音をアルコでジャストに入れるところも聴き所である。

「ジャンゴ」でも３連符の長い魅力的なソロをとるが、こちらはピチカートだけである。

この２曲だけでもゴメスの名人技を堪能できる。
この時期のエヴァンスは明るく力強い演奏が多く、その後の晩年期や６０年代の雰囲気とは異なった弾き方のように思える。

私はどちらかと言えば初期のゴメスのプレイ、あの「お城のエヴァンス」頃のゴメスの
イキのイイプレイが好きで、後期のゴメスはイマイチかな･･･と感じていました。
しかしDuoではドラムレスのおかげ(?)でイイ感じの抑制がゴメスに効いたかどうかは定かで
ないのですが、聞く側の私はこの3度目のモントルーの彼は本当に素晴らしいと思います。
もちろんエヴァンスはコンスタントに素晴らしいプレイなのですが･･･
1曲目の「Elsa」で鳥肌が立ちました。4曲目「Django」でゴメスのソロからエヴァンスの
ソロに移る際には観客の反応もスゴイです！ゴメス冴えまくってます！引き継いだエヴァンス
の熱い演奏でこの名スタンダードも屈指の名演奏だと思います。
エレピのエヴァンスもイイですね。Intuitionでは私の環境ではエレピが耳障りに聞こえて
しまうのですが、このアルバムでは全くそういうことはありませんでした。
ところで･･･いつの間にか2曲追加されていたのですね。買い直したいと思います。

エヴァンスの廉価盤リリースを首を長くして待っている今日この頃であるが、一番最初に聴きたいのがこのモントルー３だ。というのはエヴァンスとゴメスのデュエットを収めた"Intuition","Eloquence","From The 70's"が私の愛聴盤だからです。これら３盤と"Alone Again"は最近のヘヴィーローテションです。リバーサイドの頃の名盤と聞き比べても決して劣らない美しいピアノトリオと確信しています。新鮮なアイデアとチャレンジ精神溢れるこの頃の(ファンタジー時代)エヴァンスにリバーサイド時代より大きな魅力を感じてしまいます。ドラムレスですがゴメズとエヴァンスのお互いの全てを理解し合ったようなベースとピアノのインタープレイに心の芯から癒される。二人のデュッエトはエヴァンスのリリカルなピアノを強調するセッテイングとなっていてうれしい。ぐっと成熟度を増した深遠なエヴァンスのピアノに一体化したゴメスのベースがライブというオケージョンできっと爆発しているはず。ワルツォーデビーから進歩したエヴァンスがここに聴ける。デビー好きの方も本作をじっくりお聴きになってはいかがでしょうか。きっと満足されるはずですよ。廉価盤なのでお早めに！
