this heatの2ndアルバム．1stの衝撃をあまり感じなかった僕であるが，チャールズヘイワードの歌心ある攻撃に満ちたこのアルバムは初めて聴いた高校生時代はかなり衝撃を受けた．冒頭のSleepやMakeshift Swahiliも好きだが，なんといっても「New Kind of Water」につきる！this heatはこの曲を作り上げるために存在したのではないだろうか．冒頭のイントロから怒りに満ちておりそれが曲が進むにつれてさらに歌とともに爆発していく．そして．．．突然ラストの被爆症に移り，悲痛な最後となる．1stに比べて非常に聴きやすいうえに内容も濃厚であるとんでもない盤．この世に存在した最も濃厚な3ピースバンドの最後の名盤．

前衛というとアナクロだが、彼らのスタンスはそういったアナクロニズムや平均的一般人の日常感覚さえ吸い込みその足場を拡げてゆく不定形の怪物を思わせる。観念と具象性の間を行き来しながら、既に発表時から幾世代を経た現在にも鋭く響く音の核が非常に洗練されている。自分の作った刃物で現在を斬る作業、その真剣さに現在初めて触れるリスナーは圧倒されることだろう。一つのバンドがこれ以上の高みへ達することは不可能であろうと思わせる緊迫感と曲の良さ、構成力の強靭さ、全てが素晴らしい出来だ。音自体はへヴィーだが巧妙に整理されていて疲れさせない。本盤でリマスターされた音質もアナログ原盤に忠実な仕事で好感が持てる。

果敢に挑戦するリズムにドローンをダブと組み合わせた意欲作。という雰囲気。

Paper Hatsは咆哮と引きずるような重たいリズムトラックのミニマル展開から始まる。この曲は中間部のリズムチェンジからエンディングまでが激しく素晴らしい。ノイズに包囲されたアッパーなドラムパターン、続く淡々としたループ。随所に入るダイレクトなリムショット、ダブ。Independenceは大胆なベースと挑戦的なドラム。リコーダーのような音が不思議な和声を保ったまま終始鳴り響く中で朴訥な旋律のヴォーカルが続く。異教感を保ったまま次のA new kind of waterへ曲が移る。より一層朴訥なメロディーラインで曲が変わった事に気付く。この曲のスネアの音は素晴らしい。Ruinsを思わせるピッチの高いスネア。響きにこだわったアルバム。
