ベーシストがヒュー・ホッパーからロイ・バビントンに代わって発表されたCBSからの最終作。
　前作からのサウンドを踏襲しつつ、より磨きをかけコンパクトに纏めた秀作。サウンドカラーは更にジェンキンス色が増している。次作以降ギタリストを加え、よりシャープなブリティッシュ・フュージョンへと向かう橋渡しとなった作品でもある。

　もっとも、こうしたサウンドの変遷や微妙な差異にこだわるのはソフツファンの悪癖みたいなもので、一般のファンにとっては、組曲や長尺曲がないぶん、気楽にソフツの独自で高度な音楽性が楽しめる作品だろう。

６枚目からカールジェンキンスがきてから、このバンドは完全にエレクトリックなフュージョン系バンドと化してしまった感があるが、ホッパーも抜けてしまった７におけるメンバーは、もうむしろニュークリアスにラトリッジを足しただけの、本来のマシーンとはほど遠いところにきてしまった。しかし、心あるソフトマシーンのファンを完全に突き放したこのアルバムをわざわざ紙ジャケにするくらいなら、なんでセカンドをリリースしてくれなかったのが疑問だ。（ファーストはメンバーの構成からしても再発は難しそう、しかも変形ジャケだからなー・・・やっぱ欲しい！）でも個人的には結構このアルバム好きなのです。なぜか、1発目のネトルベッドの変拍子が気持ちいいほど嵌るから。特にベースが弾ける方やってみてください。ペンタ中心のフレーズですが実際に聞くよりかなり難しいですよ。とにかくマシーンの再発はうれしい限りである。どうせならバンドルス~ランドオブコケインまで（あとファーストも！！）お願いしたいところ。

前作でヒュー・ホッパーが脱退し、純カンタベリー人脈と呼べるのはマイク・ラトリッジ一人になってしまった。本作はそれに伴って拡大したカール・ジェンキンスら元ニュークリアスのメンバー達の影響力の産物だ。

これだけだと本作はカンタベリーミュージックから遠く離れた音楽性になったのか、と勘違いされる方がおられるかもしれない。
しかし本作は紛れも無いカンタベリーミュージックだ。カンタベリーの特徴である顕著なスルメ効果(聴けば聴くほど良くなるという効果)、独特のユーモア感覚や優雅なスタイルは健在だ。
デヴィッド・アレン、ケヴィン・エアーズ、ロバート・ワイアットやヒュー・ホッパーらがいなくなったって彼らがソフトマシーンであることには変わりが無いし、また、この作品がカンタベリーのみならずジャズロックの傑作であることも事実なのだ。
