熱狂的なVU / ルー・リード信者に鼻でせせら笑われているのがこのアルバムと次作の「Mistrial」。 要するに「いかにも80年代的な音」、「無理して売れようとした失敗作」となるらしい。果たしてそうだろうか？「ニューヨークの帝王」とか「伝説のロック詩人」といったイメージに左右されずに聴けば、このアルバムはかなり楽しめる。シングル・カットされたポップ・チューンの「I Love You Suzanne」（この曲のビデオは笑える！）、ゴスペル風のコーラスをフィーチャーした「Turn To Me」、あのディランにもインスピレーションを与えたという「Doin' The Things That We Want To」、50'sっぽいドラマチックなアレンジの「What Becomes A Legend Most」、ブレッカー・ブラザースが参加している「High In The City」等々、実に様々なタイプのナンバーが並んでいて聴き手を飽きさせない。その中でもやはりベスト・トラックはタイトル曲。ひとりバイクにまたがって田舎を旅する様子を淡々と歌う等身大のルーはただひたすらカッコいい。個人的には、「Fly Into The Sun」が残す静かな余韻の美しさも捨て難い。「VU & Nico」や「Berlin」といった名作アルバムのヘヴィーさに思わずたじろいでしまったような人も、これを聴くとホっとするのではないだろうか。彼のソングライターとしての実力、メロディー作りのセンスやポップ感覚、それに故ロバート・クワインとの共演を通じてあらためてギタリストとして開眼した様子が楽しめる一枚だ。

前作『Legendary hearts』からほぼ同じ布陣(ｷﾞﾀｰのﾛﾊﾞｰﾄ･ｸﾜｲﾝを除く)で制作されたLou Reedの通算１７枚目の作品がこの『New　Sensations』です。
Lou Reedは前作『Legendary hearts』、前々作『The Blue Mask』といった一連の作品でｷｬﾘｱ最高の評価を得ました。
この事はDVDの『A Night With Lou Reed』を見てもらえば実感出来ると思いますが、はっきり言ってこの時のLou Reed Bandは本当に神懸かっていました。
そんな充実した時期の、たった一年後に発表された『New Sensations』に当時のﾘｽﾅｰはかなり戸惑った事でしょう。
なぜかというと、Lou Reedの音楽がPOPになっていたからです。
明らかにこの時のLou Reedはｼﾝｸﾞﾙﾋｯﾄを狙っていました。
商業的な成功を狙った今作『New Sensations』で、ある程度のﾋｯﾄを手に入れたLou Reedでしたが、それとともに多くのﾌｧﾝを失望させたようです。
しかし、今この『New Sensations』を聴いてみると色々と酷評されている割には良くできた作品だと私は思います。
まぁ、それもそのはず。ﾊﾞﾝﾄﾞのﾒﾝﾊﾞｰはﾌｪﾙﾅﾝﾄﾞ･ｿｰﾝﾀﾞｰｽ(b)、ﾌﾚｯﾄﾞ･ﾏｰ(dr)といった黄金期を支えたﾒﾝﾂなのですから、ﾊﾞｯｸの演奏はしっかりとしているのです。
今となっては、Lou Reedの錯乱ともいえる作品たち(『Metal Machine Music』、『The Bells』などの作品)も、自分の中ではLou Reedの魅力の一つとなっています。
こういった感じに、Lou Reedの良くないとされる作品も楽しめる方には今作『New Sensations』はなかなかお薦めです。

生涯現役ロッカーであることを大いに知らしめた、８０年代前半の傑作アルバムです！

ベテランロッカーである彼が、てらいのない曲調、いわゆる直球で勝負してきた非常にカッコ良いアルバムという感強し．．．なのです。吹っ切れたような何かがあるような。
この後、mistrial という更にカッコ良い一作を出して、この傾向のロックナンバー主体のアルバムは（今のところ）打ち止めになるのが残念です。
ここでのタイトル曲のクールなカッコ良さだけでも、聴いておかねば勿体ない．．．と、強~く推薦いたします！
