1970年代のNY人脈の重要人物。という印象。キラリ光るサングラスのジャケがカッコワルイイインパクト。冒頭の3声でメロディを辿っていく堂々としたGimme some good timesは後期のマークボランのアプローチみたいでカッコいい。続くDirtもゆったりとしたBPMで後半のソウルフルなコーラスがカッコいい。ある意味Lou Reedに期待する雰囲気ではないけれど。。Street hassleは冒頭のストリングスアレンジがとても意外性のある力作。冒頭を過ぎて、ギターのダイレクトなアルペジオに合わせたポエトリーリーディング風にLou Reedの物語が語られる。シンプルなサウンドで圧倒的に聴かせる力量。途中、ベースだけになる瞬間のややオーバー気味なベースのシンプルなsolo、ギターが入り、ストリングスが低音でリフを刻む、このドラムレスの間奏からスネアが静かに入ってくるところまで、何度聴いても素晴らしい。

これはこのアルバムのレコーディングの機材の特徴なのかどうか、Lou Reedの声の倍音が他のアルバムに比べて物凄くダイレクトに収録されてる。ような気がする。この辺が好き嫌いの分かれるところか。

　78年にリリースされたアリスタからの2枚目。ルー・リードのファンのつもりですが、「ファンでも厳しいなぁ」と思う作品というのが何枚もあります。特にアリスタ時代に多いですが、これはそうした作品の一つ。ただ、アリスタ時代としては比較的評価が高い作品で、USのチャートで89位と奮闘しております。
　ルー・リードというと「人間についての鋭い洞察」「美しいメロディ」「シンプルな演奏」が特徴ですが、アリスタ時代はキーボードやホーン、時にはストリングスまで加わり、また歌詞も紋切り型となり、いろんな意味で行き詰まりを感じさせます。このアルバムでもその辺りが顕著です。またタイトル曲のストリングスは、下手という意味でも単調という意味でもクラシックを聴く人間には耐えがたい内容です。アナログしかなかったので紙ジャケを機に買い直して久しぶりに聴きましたが、通して聴くことは出来ませんでした。
　普通のロック・ファンには「ステレオ・バイノーラル・サウンド方式で録音された」「Sweet Janeのフレーズから始まる」「ヴェルヴェッツ時代の未発表曲Real Good Time Togetherを収録している」「ブルース・スプリングスティーンがゲスト参加している」という知識以外にはそれほど重要でない平凡な作品でしょう。
　なお紙ジャケとしては他のルー・リードの作品と同様にまずまずの出来栄えです。
