James Gang脱退後、1972年にbのKenny Passarelli、長年の盟友となるd・flute・keyのJoe Vitaleの３人でトリオバンド「Barnstorm」を結成、このアルバムを発表しました。バンド名義にしたいJoeとソロ名義にしたいレコード会社との確執があったようです（３枚目までその状態だったとか。今では”ソロ１枚目”とされていますが。）。発売当時、アメリカでは批評家に絶賛されましたが、セールスはのびませんでした。でも、今ではファンの評価もベスト１のようです。１から３で一気にコンセプトアルバムの雰囲気を作り、静謐と轟音が交錯しながら独特の世界が展開されます。
VitaleのフルートとJoeのoverdrive全開ギターとが自然と同居しており、当時人気の英国バンド「ジェスロ・タル」も連想させます。それにしても、「So What」にも収録されている「Turn to stone」のヘビーなこと！　４、５の重たさも半端ではありません。はまるとクセになります。今の時代では決して作ることはできない名盤です。余談ですが、Joeは理科系学校出身で、ギター・アンプ・エフェクター類は、自分でずいぶん手を加えているそうです。独特なギターの音色のオリジナリテイーはそこからきているのかもしれません。

ユーモア精神発揮の才能あるギタリスト。ソングライティングの腕がすごい。ギタリストとしても優れている。天才型の人物であり、好調と不調の波が激しいのが特色。パワートリオフォーマットで刺激のあるギターソロを聞かせる。ソロ１作目。１０点中８点
