アメリカ中西部の町セント・ルイスに住む一家の物語が数々の名曲にのせて語られる。

1903年夏、セント・ルイスに住むスミス一家の次女エスター(ジュディ・ガーランド)は、姉のローズ(ルシル・ブレマー)たちのように恋人を欲しがっていた。彼女は隣に越して来たジョン(トム・ドレイク)を想っているのだが、なかなか親しくなれなかった。ある時スミス家で開かれた兄の送別会で、エスターは、ようやくジョンと親しくなり、二人の絆は徐々に強くなっていく。ところが、エスターたちの父が突然ニューヨークへ転勤を命ぜられ、一家は引越しをする事となってしまう。エスターにとって、それは恋人ジョンと離れ離れになる事を意味した…。

「オズの魔法使い」から５年、２２歳になったJudyの最も充実した頃の映画がこの「MEET ME IN ST,LOUIS」です。MGMミュージカルの最高傑作のひとつでもあるが、なんといっても大人になったJudyがとてもチャーミングですね。小柄なせいか年齢よりもずっと若くみえるところが魅力でもある。この映画はファミリーミュージカルであるが、ラブストーリーな展開なのに男優陣が今ひとつでした。でも、Judy以上に話題を集めたのが７歳の子役Margaret O'Brien(Tootie役)でしょう。Judyが「Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas」を歌う時のTootieのなんとも悲しい表情が涙を誘います。もちろん、Judyが歌う「The Trolley Song」「The Boy Next Door」のスタンダードも最高です。
