ポップなTrack1,斬新なリズムのTrack2,幻想的なTrack10,ジャンルに囚われない落ち着いた大人の雰囲気の中盤の曲群。
ジョニ曰くこのアルバムと後に続く逃避行、ドンファン〜の三作品はそれぞれトータルアルバムとして映画のように作ったと後に語っています。
その三作品中この「夏草の誘い」がオムニバス映画のような一番バラエティ色に溢れている作品です。

クールでアフリカといえば１０中８，９はトーキングヘッズのRemain in Lightを思い出す方
が多いでしょうが、ジョニのアルバムはそれに先立つこと約５年前にアフリカを取り扱って
いるところに彼女の先見性を感じます。

１曲目の「フランスの恋人たち」はジョニのアルバムの典型的な１曲目のパターンですが、使
われている音や響きはメジャーともマイナーともつかないようなコードの使用により、クール
な印象を与えます。２曲目の「ジャングルライン」はブルンジのドラムを大胆に曲中に取り入
れておりますが、そのリズムに熱狂して呼応するのではなく冷静に歌を重ねます。そのほかに
も佳曲が多いですが、白眉なのは、３曲目の「エディスと親玉」、８曲目の「ハリーの家〜セ
ンターピース」のジャズ色の強い曲群でしょうか。

このＣＤを聞く時はボーカルだけではなく、全ての楽器に耳を澄ましてください。さりげなく
いろんな楽器がいろんなことをしており、それを見つけるのも楽しみの一つです。ジャズ・
フュージョン色が強いのは次作ですが、クールな静謐さが本作の魅力でもあります。

前作「マイルズ・オブ・アイルズ」で初期のフォーク／ロック路線を総括したジョニは、本作以降ジャズ路線に転換しますが、本作はその第１作となった作品。その次の、ジャコ・パストリアス等を起用してよりジャズ路線を深化させた「逃避行」以降の作品群と初期のフォーク／ロック時代の作品群に挟まれて、本作はその位置づけが難しいのですが、買って損をすることはない傑作であることは疑う余地がありません。ここでジョニが聴かせる曲は都会的なクールさに彩られたジャジーな曲が多く、今聞いても古さを感じさせない秀逸な曲ばかりです（１曲目のような素敵なポップスの例外もありますが）。ジャケットはジョニ自身が描いたもので、現代文明の象徴の摩天楼と大蛇（？）を持つアフリカ人（？）に象徴されるプリミティブさを対比させており、２曲目を予告するかのようです。スタジオ・ワークを駆使したクリアで斬新な音作りで、摩天楼に合うクールなジャズの世界を展開する本作は、ワン・アンド・オンリーの本作限りの超名盤と言ってよいでしょう。付言すると、最後の曲は「シャドウズ・アンド・ライト」。この曲はジャズ時代を通じて様々に味付けされていきますが、オリジナルは本作のもので、実に素晴しい出来です。この名曲が聴けるだけでも本作は価値があると考えます。
