現在21歳、英国生まれの彼。5歳でギターを手に弾き語りを始め、13歳の時にブルースを教えてもらってからはミュージシャンとしての才能が目覚め、その後は古いソウル・ミュージックからインスプレーションを受け、黙々と曲を書き続けっていったそう。

若きジェームス・モリソンは自身に満ちている。キャッツ・ステーブンス、オティス・レディング、そしてヴァン・モリソンのようなソウルの大物からの影響を受けたこのデビューアルバムの「アンディスカバード」では、「レイター・ウィズ・ジュールズ・ホランド」をラグビー生まれのヴォーカリストの持つ、世間に疲れた様(の波にもまれた様)な声と、作曲のセンスは、以前ダミエン・ライス、ジェイムス・ブラントと以前のツアー仲間のコリーヌ・ベイリー・レイといった、スターを作った成功への道へと導いてくれる(成功の条件がそろっている)。『アンディスカバード』は、KTタンスタルとロン・セックススミスのプロデユーサー、マーティン・テレフェによってあふれるほど多くの楽器の音が丁寧に演奏されている。正直で情熱的なラブソングの『アンダー・ザ・インフレンス』は、派手なピアノからビートルズっ風の弦楽器の演奏のアレンジから作り上げられている一方、涙を誘う『ワンダフル・ワールド』は、「素晴らしい世界だってわかっている/でも今はそれがわからないよ」といった感情的なメッセージと、楽観的なブラスとパーカッションの連続と調和がとれている。 アルバムの聴き所は、「ユー・ギブ・ミー・サムシング」と最後の曲の「ベター・マン」で、ソロのアコースティックの曲目がモリソンの声の音域の広さを引き出している。ニューイングランド出身の白人がソウルを歌うことに戸惑いを感じるかもしれないが、「アンディスカバード」の確かな成功は力強い声がいつでも要だということを証明してくれる。

今、世界を席捲している感があるR&B・ソウルの類は、クールすぎるし、どこかスタイルばかりが先行しているような気がして、馴染めない。耳を引く音使いがあったとしても、それは感動というよりも驚きと言ったほうがいい。熱唱するバラードも、あの耐え難いメロドラマ風PVのように、涙を強いる押し付けがましいところが気に入らない。

james morrisonの歌は久し振りに聴いた、暖かく優しいソウルミュージック。
全身を使って歌うかのように瑞々しく弾む彼の歌声は、もの悲しい詩や曲調においても決してクールにならなず、ひたすら暖かい。じんわりと聴くものの身体に染みてくる。

ダイナミックにロックのグルーヴに乗るunder the influence、ベビーフェイスが好きそうなソウルバラードthe pieces don't fit anymore、R&B調のone last chance、ブリティッシュポップ色も感じられるthis boy、ブルージーなif the rain must fall。歌声の圧倒的な存在感に引けをとらない、多様でしかもオーセンティックな曲作りのセンスも素晴らしい。

ブラックミュージック的なサウンドや、ハスキーな歌声があるからといって、ソウルミュージックが生まれるわけではない。どうしても歌いたい歌があって、そこに魂が込められた時にはじめてソウルミュージックが生まれるのだ。彼の優しく暖かい歌声を聴くたびに、そう思わすにはいられないし、このアルバムには、間違いなくその瞬間、つまりソウルミュージックが生まれる瞬間が見事に収められている。

とにかく声に惹かれました。もともとハスキーボイスが好きなんです。ロッドスチュワートやブルーススプリングスティーンやトムウェイツやらダミ声に近いですが彼の場合はハスキーな上に鼻にかかったキュートで悲しげな声なんですよね。しかもスティングの知的な感じもあって。
ただまだまだ若いなぁ〜って思いつつ、これから先が楽しみなミュージシャンです。

久々に聴きこむ一枚にであった。james morrison
個人的にfiona appleの様なリズムの始まり方をした１曲目から
引き込まれた。
２曲目のシングル曲は彼の声と音が素晴らしくて何度聴いても
聴くだけ染みいる。
音が鳴っていなくても心の中で鳴っている。
アルバムを通して何度繰り返してもこんなに聴くアルバムは
久しぶりで彼に出会えて嬉しい。

いろんなところで彼の歌声はライヴでさらに生きてくるらしいので
来日公演を愉しみに待っているところ・・・
