私もこの映画は中学生の時分に映画館で観たひとり。劇場は今は無き「テアトル東京」で、スクリーンが湾曲していた（マシンも歪んで映し出された）のを懐かしく思い出す。
マックイーンのファンにはあまり重視されない作品だが、私にはこの映画の彼は絶品に思える。極端に少ないセリフと、美女を前にした時の木訥な男っぷりは、名作「ブリット」よりもさらに魅力的だ。
自らプロダクションを設立して臨んだ本作は、無名の監督の起用など、事実上マックイーンが「制作総指揮」を務めたと見て良い。自らレーシングマシンのステアリングも握った彼が本作で目指したのは、すべてのレーサーに対するリスペクトの表現だったのだろう。
余談だが本作の元ネタはルルーシュ監督の「男と女」だと思う。また作中に登場するマシンは基本的に全て本物、ただし現実のレースでフェラーリ512Pはポルシェ917にまったく歯が立たなかった。またクラッシュシーンで潰されるマシンは「ローラT70」にフェラーリやポルシェの皮を被せたものだそうだ。

大昔に小さいテレビで観たおぼろげな記憶しかなかったので買ってみた。50インチ以上の画面でギリギリ近めに座ってヘッドホン大音量で観るべし！ちょっとしたトリップ！917vs512の対立構図がバッチリ描かれていて大迫力！！今思えば、この年に制作したのは大正解でしたね。'70年前後のマシンが一番輝いていた気がする。今年のル・マン クラシックを観に行きたくなった。

１９７３年。はじめてのリバイバル公開（初公開からたった２年で）でテアトル東京で観ました。当時から日本ではすごい人気の映画で家電メーカーの広告にポスターが使われていたほどでした。映画はドキュメンタリータッチで淡々と進み何より子供心に驚いたのはマックイーンが優勝しないということでした。敗者の美学。マックイーン完璧です。
