冒頭、料理を作るシーンだけで圧倒されてしまう。
舞台は台北。台湾で一番有名なホテルの料理長と彼の３人の娘達の物語。
頑固で不器用な父親と堅物教師の長女、美人でキャリアウーマンの次女、自由で芸術系らしい三女が毎週豪華な食卓を囲んで、食事と恋愛と家族模様を繰り広げる。李安監督らしい繊細でユーモラスな人間ドラマと華麗な中華料理の数々が織り成すドラマ。
もう10年以上前になるけれど、映画館で見て、レンタルビデオで借りて、とうとうＤＶＤも購入。何度繰り返して見てもじんわりしてしまう。リー・アン監督の作品の中でも特にお勧め。

アン・リー監督の台湾時代の父親3部作（父親との関係を描いた作品で他に「推手」、「ウェディング・バンケット」がある）の第3作。
三姉妹とホテルの総料理長を務める父親との関係を日曜日に開かれる食事会を通して互いの心情をぶつける形で展開される。話が進むにつれ父親に料理を教わりながらも料理人になることを反対されキャリアウーマンになった次女と父親との確執と互いを思う気持ちに焦点はあてられていく（この父と娘の確執劇はどこか「黄昏」のヘンリー・フォンダとジェーン・フォンダの関係を彷彿させる）。
最も家のことを考えていると思われた長女の本心や自由奔放な末娘の行動を観ていくうちに、観る者は次女の思いに自然に感情移入していけるところが良い。
ただ、終盤のそれぞれの知人、恋人を招いての食事会での父親を想う友人の母親のはじけぶりは興ざめでラストのしみじみとした親娘の対話を台無しにしている感がある。
しかし、全体として三姉妹と父親の関係を食卓という場をとおして見事に整理したなかなかの秀作だった。

ところで、原題の「飲食男女」が何故「恋人たちの食卓」という邦題になるのだろうか？ラストまで観ると確かに「恋人たち」といえないわけではないことに気づかせられるが、どちらかというと「家族の食卓」ではないだろうか。どう考えても商業的なうけを狙ったとしか思えない邦題だと思う。

　「父親三部作」の完結編だけあって監督の（親子・兄弟・恋愛についての）倫理観の総合的な展示であることはいうまでもないであろう。
　オールドミスやキャリアウマン、それから自由奔放なモダンガール、三姉妹はいろんな意味で男と葛藤する、一種のぴりぴりモードをよそに、お父さんは逆に真の愛を手に入れる（彼は三姉妹の幼馴染と結婚する）という、きわめて転倒した、タブーのような映画である。衝撃です。したがって、「父親三部曲」三作目の本作は名前だけではなく、（女の連帯を男が壊していく意味で）フェミニストであるなら痛烈に批判するであろう男性中心主義的な問題作と看做されてもいいのだ。しかし、この映画では父親の権威喪失、家庭形式の解体という結果が代償的に提示されているので均衡がかろうじて保たれ、東洋人がお年寄り主義＝文化のプライドを放棄する形で後ほどのハリウッドでの大活躍の前提にもなっている。
　これを問題視しない観客がほとんどであろうため、採点では彼らの一般的な高い評判をそのまま引き受けるけど。
