元ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの中心人物であるルー・リードが75年に発表したロック史上最大の問題作のひとつ。

まず秀逸なのは「メタル・マシーン・ミュージック」というこの究極のフレーズのタイトル。これにピンと来ないのならこのアルバムをわざわざ購入して聴く必要は無いと思う。それほど人を選ぶ作品である。

ここではルー・リードのヴォーカルは聴くことは出来ない。全編がギターのフィードバック・ノイズ音で埋め尽くされている。メロディも無い。

所謂「ノイズ・ミュージック」として扱うのも、今の時代となってはどうなのだろうという気もするが、ノイズ入門にも最適の一枚と言ってしまっていいかもしれない。

この作品が発表された当時、かつての仲間ジョン・ケイルがラ・モンテ・ヤングと共に活動していたりしたので、恐らくルー・リードも現代音楽的な視野に立ってこのアルバムを制作したのだろう。

個人的には、このアルバムが死ぬ程好きである。
時代的に、後に登場するハーシュ・ノイズ勢が放出する音圧の凄さは無いが、ギターが織り出す「流麗」な、ある種暖かみすら感じる音の美しさは未来永劫褪せることは無い。

これを失敗作として一蹴してしまうのは容易いが、無理をしてでもしっかりと耳を傾けてみて欲しい。最初は苦痛なだけの雑音がいつかきっと貴方の心を浄化してくれるはずである。

なんだこれは!こんなに素晴らしかったのか!賛否両論とか言うから買うタイミングをなくしてたが、ノイズ音楽としては、僕の知ってる中では最高だ!
ルー・リードの音楽センスがふんだんに入ってる!こんな風にノイズの中にアイデアを取り込むことができるのか!ただのダラダラしたノイズじゃない!音のアイデアの密度が凄い!ギターだけで!こんなにも!ミニマル音楽だ!

このアルバムは、LPレコードでは２枚組です。
さあ、レコードに針を落として聴いてビックリ！！
始めから最後まで「ギィ〜グア〜ギィ〜・・・」
買ってはいけない、地雷盤だったのです。
まさか、CD化されるとは？？？
ただただ、驚きです。コレクターズアイテムでしょう。
