まるで今宵懐かしのヨーロピアンムービーを見ている様で感動的である。ストーリ展開であるコンセプチュアリーな手法はP.タウンジェントに影響を受けておりまさにそれはオリジナリティーとして開花してると断言して良いだろう。映画館で開演前にパンフに目をとうす様にある程度の知識を得てこの名盤に望んでもらいたい。彼のその後の本筋とは明らかに異なった一作ではあるが、ロック史上不朽の名盤には間違い無い。ラストの「サッドソング」で、もはや貴方の涙腺は粉々に破壊されるであろう。深夜にヘッドフォンで聴くべし。

ルー・リードのソロ３作目『ベルリン』。
前作『トランスフォーマー』の華やかなイメージとは打って変わり、暗く悲しい物語を描いたトータル・アルバムとなっていて、青年ジムと娼婦キャロラインを中心に物語は進んでいきます。

曲自体も、歌詞とは裏腹にポップな「キャロラインのはなし（１）」や「暗い感覚」、後半子供の泣き声がかぶさるアコースティックな曲「子供たち」、ドラマティックで美しい「悲しみの歌」など魅力的なものが多いです。しかし、やはり歌詞を理解した上で聴いた方がいいので、本作は訳の付いた国内盤がおすすめです。とくに後半の、「キャロラインのはなし（２）」からラストの「悲しみの歌」の流れは歌詞を読みながら聴くと、切なく胸が締め付けられる思いがします。

また、紙ジャケはＥ式シングルジャケになっていて、独特な紙質が再現されています。解説、対訳が載っているブックレットとは別に、曲ごとにその物語のワンシーンを写した写真が載っているブックレットも付いています。キャロラインが自殺する「ベッド」の、血の付いたベッドの写真はこの切ない物語を象徴しています。

陽気で明るい音楽を求めている方に本作はおすすめできません。癒しを求めている方にも薦められません。
イーグルスの『ホテル・カリフォルニア』のような切なく美しい音楽を求めている方におすすめします。
