日本のロック界の重鎮、ミッキー・カーチス氏や内田裕也氏がこの国にロックを根付かせようとした功労者だとすれば、それを最初に形にしたのはジョー山中氏のフラワー・トラベリンバンドとこのクリエイションだったと思っている。
フラワーはかなり大々的にカナダやアメリカでツアーを敢行したため日本のロックの古典的代表バンドと見られているが、このクリエイションはその音楽性と技量において「日本で初めて外国のバンドと同格に並んだバンド」と言って良い。フラワーが日本的な旋律の楽曲とジョー山中氏のボーカリストとしての資質で売ったバンドであったのに対し、クリエイションは洋楽と全く同じ土俵で勝負した日本初のインターナショナルなバンドだった。
竹田和夫氏のギターばかりが語られるケースが多いバンドだが、もう一人のギタリスト・飯島義昭氏もギタリストとしての資質は竹田氏には劣るもののチョーキングと倍音を多用したギタースタイルが竹田氏のギターと絶妙なコントラストを描いていて、ナイスなコンビだったと思う。また樋口晶之氏のハネるようなドラムは、後にクリエイションがファンキー路線に転換して行った際にその才能が見事に開花する。
このアルバムはクリエイションの1stで、当時の日本のロックのレベルを遥かに超えて技術的にはブリティッシュ・ロックの名盤と比肩しても何ら遜色ない作りになっているのが凄い。当時の日本のレコーディング技術、音処理の技術がもっと高ければ、今のリスナーの耳で聴いても古さは感じないのではないかと思う。
竹田和夫氏は現在アメリカにて活動中。ロック、ブルースはもちろんのことジャズのスタンダード曲やボサノヴァ・タッチのオリジナル曲まで、まさにギターを自在に操る物凄いギタリスト。もはや“ロック・ギタリスト”ではなく“ギター・アーティスト”と呼ぶのが相応しい。

クリエイションは、やはりこのアルバムだ。元祖子供のおちんちんジャケが最高だ。女の子だったらもちろん発禁だったろうな、やっぱし。ところで竹田和夫もこのころが一番乗っていたんではないか？あのころチャーも森園も元気だったな。日本のロックの黎明期の名作。

往年のブリティッシュ(死語?)ハード・ロック・グループのウィッシュボーン・アッシュのツイン・リード・ギターを研ぎ澄ましたような#1、#3、#9や、これも往年のアメリカン・ハード・ロック・グループのマウンテンのサウンドを彷彿とさせる#6などが素晴らしい!その他の楽曲もロック寄りのイエロー・ブルースで好感が持てる。あのクリームの影の立役者、そして上記のマウンテンのメンバーでプロデューサーの、故フェリックス・パッパラルディがベース、ボーカル、プロデューサーとして参加したクリエイションのセカンド・アルバムも、どうかCD発売を是非ともお願いします、東芝EMI様!
