チェット・ベイカーのアルバムはヴォーカルとトランペットの両方を聴かせる作品が多いが、これは一切歌はなし、全編トランペットに徹したインストゥルメンタル作品。
一応ウエスト・コースト・ジャズの範疇に入れていい演奏だが、ボビー・ティモンズの参加によって、ウエストらしからぬたくましいサウンドになっている。そのあたりが本作の妙味といっていい。ティモンズはこのあとアート・ブレイキーのジャズ・メッセンジャーズに加入、ファンキー・ジャズの代名詞的ナンバー「モーニン」を作曲した人。ティモンズはこの当時チェット・ベイカー・コンボのレギュラー・ピアニストだったが、あまりにもイースト的なティモンズをあえて自分のバンドに起用したチェットの意図は？ 要するに当時のチェットはウエスト・コースト・ジャズの貴公子では不満、イースト・コースト・ジャズ~ハード・バップに魅力を感じていたようだ。これはそういう時代のチェットをとらえた元気いっぱいの作品。ボーナス・トラック6曲を加えた14曲入りという点も要注目だ。（市川正二）
