1970年代後半、マイケル フランクスのセカンド-スリーピング　ジプシーを購入した頃、FMでニックデカロの曲もかけてくれてエアチェックしました。
その後、このアルバムのことは忘れていましたが、3年くらい前にCDショップで検索してもらうと、あったんです、イタリアングラフィティが。

即、予約して、届いたという連絡が来て購入して、家で聞くと懐かしいけれど、今でも良い。
マイケルフランクスのArt Of Teaにも参加していたとか。
Doobie Brothersのスタピードのストリングスが壮大だったのは、ニックデカロがストリングスを担当していたんですね。

ある人のサイトでニックデカロのことを書いたら、地方のFM曲が夜中に

イタリアングラフィティを流してくれました。

６０年代から７０年代にかけてレニー・ワロンカーやトミー・リピューマなどの大物プロデューサーとのコラボレイトで数々のヒットを世に送り出した編曲家／アコーディオニスト、ニック・デカロ。そんな彼が既存のポップソングを用い、自らが消化してきたジャズ、ソウル、ボッサなどのエッセンスを巧く散りばめ、自身のコーラス多重録音という手段で制作されたのが本作。後のＡＯＲの源流としてマイルストーン的作品とされているが、それ以上に彼の時代感や編曲法に驚嘆。この作品が無かったら後のポップスシーンに影響があったのではと思わせる程の出来映え。まさにワン＆オンリー、不世出である。また、ディヴィッド・Ｔやバド・シャンクらの好演も聴きどころ。

ＡＯＲという言葉に反応してしまう方、ふだん聴かないけれど足を踏み入れようとしている方、ちょっとこのジャンルと構えてみるかぁなんて方は、まず手にとらざるをえない作品でしょう。ＪＡＺＺやソウルといった黒っぽい音に同量のポップス性を注入したカフェオレ的な音楽というんでしょうか、洗練されて、かつ心地よい上がりになっていてそれがＡＯＲの先鞭となったわけですね。
