なかなか取扱いに悩むアルバム。

ブラジル、モータウン、ジャマイカあたりまでは良いが
アフリカは少し違うような気がする。
ビッグネームになりセルフ・プロデュースで好きなことが
出来るのだろうけど、ファンは置いてけぼりの感がある。

アフリカっぽいパーカッションにゆるいギターのシークェンスが中心。
しかし、ブラジル調もありそれぞれの曲調はバラバラでごった煮のよう。
「イン・リオ」のアフリカ版と評する向きもあるが全然違う。
統一性も無いし、透明感も無い。

今回はバリトン・ギターをはじめいろいろなタイプのギターを弾いており、
３本のギターが重なっている時もある。
クリーンなリーのソロが好きな人には物足りない。
リフやソロも精彩を欠いている。

カバーの「ラブリー・デイ」は南アフリカのザマジョベという名の
女性ボーカルを起用しているが、ピーター・ホワイトも最新版で
この曲をジョナサン・バトラーでやっているのが面白い。

12歳の彼の息子がドラムで参加しているが、この親バカさも
聴く側にとってすこしツライものがある。

いちばん、リーっぽいのが日本版のボーナストラック
っだったりする。古くからのリーのファンはチャック・ローブや
ピーター・ホワイトの方がしっくり来るのではないだろうか。

タイトルのように煙と鏡で見失わなければ良いのだが。

2002年『RIT'S HOUSE』以来4年ぶりとなるスタジオ・レコーディング。ゲストもかなり豪華な顔ぶれ。中でもベーシストが5人も参加には驚いた(苦笑)前作『OVERTIME』ではあまり高評価でなかったもので、理解はしていたが…CDショップで試聴してみたところ..これが予想とは違いなかなかの好感触。よく使用しているギブソンL-5、ES-335、ヤマハ・サイレントギターの3本に加え様々なギターの音色が聴けた。とくにエレアコやアコギの曲が多くなっている。パーカッションも曲によってふんだんに使い分けてあって音質もよかったのである。自分のお気に入りトラックは3曲目「サウスウェスト・パッセージ」6曲目「スペルバインダー」8曲目「ポヴォ」。中でも「ポヴォ」でのP.ラッシェンのフェンダーローズ・ソロがすごい。Jazz風なアプローチでかっこいい。最近のリトナーの作品ではまぁまぁな内容だとは思う。

どうも大物になるにつれアフリカ音楽などに手を伸ばしていく姿勢が好きになれない。
アフリカ楽器のような音も入ってるがごちゃごちゃしすぎて音楽としてどうかと思う。
あまりリーリトナー節を聴けないのも残念。
好きな人は好きなんだろうけど、、、
