　前作「Frangers」の端々で垣間見ることのできた、既存のフォーマットを嘲笑うかのように目まぐるしく表情を変える展開とフックの効いたメロディ。2年半のインターヴァルを挟んで届けられたこの2ndアルバムにおいて、その卓越した音の構築力は完全にその姿を露わにした。
　
　氷塊を思わせる重く怜悧なギターリフが叩き込まれ、オーロラを思わせるコーラスが下から湧き上がるオープニングトラックから、ほぼ全ての楽曲が途切れることなく展開していく。「音の万華鏡」と評した前作のカラフルさとは異なり、今作、特にアルバム前半部では空間を掘削する重厚なリフとリズム隊が前面に押し出されている。故に、一切の夾雑物を廃したヨーナスの歌声がより強烈なコントラストを伴って鳴り響き、耳殻へと突き刺さる。中でもマイナーコードのギターリフが激しくかき鳴らされるTr.5"Apocalypso"から、邪気溢れるリズム隊と下層で戯れるヨーナスの歌声に背筋をゾクゾクさせられるTr.6"Special"、天使の交歓を思わせる美しいハーモニーが舞い踊る"The Zookeeper's Boy"へと続く流れは何度聴いても素晴らしく、言葉に言い表しがたい昂揚感をもたらしてくれる。

　"She Came Home For Christmas"や"Comforting Sounds"のような、完全に高みへと突き抜け完結する楽曲を数多備えたデビュー盤も鮮烈だったが、作品トータルとしての完成度を見れば、今作とは比較にならないだろう。荒々しくも柔らかで、眩暈のするような昂揚感が横溢する素晴らしい作品だ。

デンマークの4人組ロックバンド
MEWの2ndアルバム。

傑作デビュー・アルバム『フレンジャーズ』から2年半、
2ndアルバムで失速してしまうバンドの多い中、
彼らは、勇気を持って大胆な世界観に
チャレンジしてきた。

内面の闇に広がるダークなテイスト、
プログレを思わせる壮大な展開と美しさ、
タイトで剥き出しのロック・スピリッツ。
それらが、彼らの持ち味である繊細な透明感と共鳴し
耽美で神秘的なロック・オペラを
高い完成度で作り上げている。

歪みながら、飛翔する大胆さと
湖面の波紋のような静けさ。

デビュー作の延長線上を期待していた人には
たぶん衝撃を与えるだろうが
聞き込むうちに、きっと納得がいくだろう。

彼ららしさが絶妙に織り込まれているからだ。

そして、深さと厚みを増したサウンドと
ダークな中毒性の魔力に取り憑かれるかもしれない。

日本盤の日本語ボーナス・トラック
「White Lips Kissed」を聴くと
彼らの誠実さ・真摯な姿勢がよくわかる。

相当練習したであろうヴォーカルは
これまで多くなされてきた
海外アーティストによる
いい加減な日本語とは一線を画す
素晴らしい出来。

ジャケットのアートワークの
出来の悪さだけが残念だ。

ジャケが１ｓｔと大分違い、ちょっと不気味に見えなくもない。
曲は１ｓｔのキャッチーさや、イキオイはないかもしれない。

だけど、ながーく聴けるアルバムになりそう。
静かなんだけど、ノイジーなギターはバックでずぅっと炸裂してる。
なんつーかジワジワと脳に染み込んできて、心地良すぎる不協和音とでもいうか。。
北欧特有？の静と動がうまい具合に絡み合い、安らぎを与えてくれる。
一方で、生への強い衝動みたいなものも感じる。

うーん、いい意味で化けたな。
全然違うけど、MansunのSIXを思い出しました。
ルックスやら声で女の子から人気あるのはわかるけど、ヤロー含め万人に通用するロックだ。
特にこのアルバムでの数少ない疾走感溢れる曲であるapocalypsoは文句なしにカッコイイ。
聴いてると、遠くに逃避したくなるような。。

北欧にまたひとつ、グレイトなアルバムが完成した。。
