'There's nothing to fear but fear itself...'、とつぶやくリプレーは真の人間関係から遮断された暗い過去をもつ孤独な男。クールな外貌の下には不安と恐怖が渦を巻いている。そんな彼を、生きながらにして死んだことになっている画家デルワットは諭す。「人に好かれようとするな」と。この画家だけにはリプレーの内面はお見通しなのである。リプレーは余命幾許もない額縁職人ヨナタンに握手を拒まれた精神的ダメジから彼を売ってしまう...。たったそれだけのことで、と言う勿れ。この映画の登場人物はすべて彼ら自身にとって切実な動機によって行動する。ヴェンダースは神さながらに彼らを操る。孤独、友情、死の恐怖、家族への愛...。ヴェンダースはハイスミスの原作を見事に換骨奪胎、最高の現代映画に仕上げている。

　今回の、ヴィム・ヴェンダース・セレクションのバラ売りの目玉は、やはり「パリ、テキサス」。
　この作品は、傑作中の傑作。長い間、廃盤となっていたので、待望の再発といえるでしょう。
　しかし、この「アメリカの友人」も、忘れてはならない傑作です。
　芸術性と娯楽性を兼ね備えた本作は、ヴェンダース作品では珍しい、サスペンスという点においても、一見の価値ありです。

　この作品で印象に残るのは、「赤」。それは、白血病のヨナタンの血の色、殺人の色。作品の要所要所で、この「赤」が使用されています。
　パトリシア・ハイスミスの原作に、ヴェンダースが脚色を加えた本作は、「パリ、テキサス」にも、引けをとらない傑作。
　美しい映像に目が奪われます。ユルゲン・クニーパーの音楽に耳を奪われます。そして、秀逸なストーリーに心が奪われます。
　まだ、ご覧になられていない方は、映画の世界に引き込まれると思います。既に、ご覧になられた方も、観る度に、発見と衝撃があるはずです。
　
　また、デジタルニューマスター版、ということで、期待度も★５つです。

「ベルリン天使の詩」や「パリ・テキサス」とはまた違う秀逸な作品。ストーリーははっきりしており、映像、音楽ともにきれいで、ヴェンダース作品の中でも完成度が高いとおもいます。ただし、やや難解。前２作のような柔い内容ではなく、なんだか硬派な感じ。やや暗い内容。
　　ヴェンダースは、原作のパトリシア・ハイスミスに猛烈にアタックした結果、なんとかこの作品の映画化権を獲得したということですが、いやはや、デニス・ホッパーが強烈な個性を光らせており、それをみるだけでも面白い映画になっています。題名の「アメリカの友人」はあまり全体の内容を表しているとは思えないですが、それはともかく何度見ても楽しめるという不思議な映画です。中身が濃く、とても速くリズミカルにカットや場面が変わるので、脳みそをかなり集中して見ないといけないような感じ。特に、出だしのところはストーリーを追うのが難しいですが、めげずにどうぞ。ブルーノ・ガンツもいい味出してます。
