5.0 out of 5 stars 旧弊なファンを痛快に裏切り続けた問題作, 2006/8/26
すでに伝説と化していますが、この１９８１年の再結成アルバムがリリースされたときに、「これはクリムゾンじゃない」と落胆と悲憤の声が巻き起こりましたね。

あれから既に四半世紀、ファンの間でも「ディシプリンこそ最高傑作」という評価があるくらいです。

音楽面では、ニューウェーブの下地の上で、ポリリズムやリズムのディレイがもたらすマジックを聴かせるバンドになったので、純音楽的に素晴らしいアルバムです。

蛇足ながら、フリッパートロニクスも基本的にはディレイ＆フィードバックシステムです。フリップがクリムゾンとフリッパートロニクスを平行して活動していたのも、頷けます。

1981年に発表された新生クリムゾンの第1作です。トーキング・ヘッズでのプレイが冴え渡っていた奇才エイドリアン・ブリューをやはり「強奪」してメインギタリストに迎え、ベースにはスキンヘッドのベース（スティック・ベース）の魔術師トニー・レイヴンを据えて、今までに聴かれなかった大変キッチュな音の世界を作り上げています。

まずは1「Elephant Talk」ではいきなりエイドリアン・ブリューによる象の咆哮が炸裂します。こんなのは以前のクリムゾンでは考えられなかったこと。続く「Frame By Frame」では何とグループ禁断の“ハーモニー”まで出てくる始末です。それにしてもエイドリアン・ブリューの曲がりくねったギターソロは完全に「変態の域」に達していますが、対する御大フリップのプレイは相変わらず冷徹、冷静で機械的ですらあります。この2人のまったくキャラが異なるギタリストが織りなす摩訶不思議な世界は、聴いているうちに妙なトランス状態へと導いていく静かなパワーを感じます。トニー・レイヴンが作り出すスティックによるフレーズも、当時としては斬新で、2人のギタリストが作り出す変態世界に確かな彩りを加えています。

Discipline＝鍛錬、訓練と名づけられたこのアルバムがリリースされた当時、御大フリップは「自ら鍛錬を続けることによって、より完成された音楽を作り出すことができる。私のこれまでのプレイは非常に雑で粗野だった。だから、今までの自分のプレイのすべてを捨て去ったうえで新たに鍛錬、訓練を続けながら自分の音楽を志向していくことになるであろう。だからアルバムのタイトルもDisciplineにした」という意味合いの発言をしていました。この発言がどこまで本気でどこまで冗談なのかは、発売後20年以上経ったいまでも分かりませんが、従来のクリムゾンのイメージを完全に打ち破ったのは事実です。また、以前のクリムゾンのイメージを求めてこのアルバムに接した人は、強烈な拒否感を示したことも事実でしょう。そう感じさせた時点で、御大フリップはきっとニヒルな笑みを浮かべたに違いません。個人的には永遠と続く無機質なアルペジオを弾くには、やはり日常の鍛錬、訓練が必要だなと感じましたが。
