C.クロスがデビューした時は驚いた。都会的なサウンドを澄んだ高音で歌い、聴く者に新鮮な感動を与えた。まるで、オペラかクラシックの歌手のようで、新人ながら通常のアメリカン・ポップスの歌手の域を超えた存在感だった。しかも、本作に特に特徴が出ているが、決して見かけ上の繊細さだけでなく、バックに骨太さを感じさせる点が印象的だった。

日本では「Ride Like The Wind」と「Sailing」がほとんど同時にシングル・カットされ、その後もヒットを飛ばし、その年のグラミー賞を総ナメにした。従来のカントリーやアメリカン・ロックの影響を感じさせない(あるいは昇華しきった)、独自のサウンドが本当に魅力的だった。

次第にニューヨーク・サウンドに偏って行くのだが、本作では骨太感がまだ残っており、その上で繊細な歌声を聴かせる絶妙なバランスが楽しめる傑作アルバム。

とても質が高いアルバムです。70年代にイーグルス、ドゥービー・ブラザーズやスティーリー・ダンが構築した、一流ミュージシャンの演奏で精巧に録音された、渋い土臭さを漂わせるサウンドを引き継ぎつつ、一般層に幅広く受けそうなポップな楽曲を提示して、唯一無二のクリアーなハイトーンボイスを乗せた、アメリカの都会的ポップスの一つの完成形が表れたようなアルバムです。一回目に聴いた時には切ない曲調と美しいヴォーカルが印象に残りますが、回数を重ねても飽きにくいのは前述の70年代のアメリカンロックの努力の部分をしっかり継承しているからでしょう。

埃っぽい街に澄んだ声のカウボーイが颯爽と現れたような衝撃のデビュー作です。本作は後年に比べホーンアレンジや雰囲気が西部劇風で渋いのが特徴。ほとんどの曲を自作しており、ソングライターとしての実力も高いです。本作が大ヒットしすぎたために次作以降は過小評価気味ですが、ベスト盤に収録された4枚目まではヒットに関係なく質が高いです。特に3枚目以降がヒットしなかったのは、80年代のケニー・ロギンスやフィル・コリンズに倣ったようなプロデュースと楽曲が飽きられてしまったからではないかなと思います。そういうフィルターが取れた現在のほうが、逆に良質なポップ性が純粋に楽しめるのではないでしょうか。
ビッグ・イン・ジャパン（日本でのみ大人気の海外アーティスト）のひとりとして捉えられるには惜しい名盤です。

初めて聴いたのは大学生のころで一発で好きになったけど、油の乗り切った中年ど真ん中の今のほうが、遥かにこのアルバムの本当の真価がよくわかるのは、一体、なぜだろう？　この1stは、ＡＯＲとして分類されるは大間違い。　カントリー色の全く無い、純度100%のウエスト・コースト・ロック。　おそらく永遠に聴き継がれる、50年に1枚出るか出ないかの、奇跡の１枚である。
