７２年発表、ユーライア・ヒープの４thアルバム。邦題は『悪魔と魔法使い』。
前作『Look At Yourself（対自核）』でメジャーに躍り出た彼らですが、
本作は前作を遥かに凌ぐ完成度を誇り、前作を越えるヒットを記録しました。
印象的なジャケットのアート・ワークはロジャー・ディーンによるものです。

前作で聴かせたキーボード主体のハードロック・スタイルはそのままに、
美しいジャケット・アートも手伝って“幻想世界”という新たな武器を手にした本作は、
アルバム通した完成度が非常に高く、バンドの最高傑作に挙げられることの多い作品です。

基本的にはやはりキーボードがメインですが、本作は様々な表情を見せるギターが印象的です。
「The Wizard」「Paradise」での意表を突いたアコースティック・ギターや、
「Poet's Justice」での鋭いカッティング、「Circle Of Hands」のメロディアスなソロなど、随所にその存在感を見せます。
また、バンドの特徴でもあるコーラス・ワークも更に磨きがかかっています。
前作では高音重視のコーラスがほとんどでしたが、本作では「All My life」等で美しいハーモニーを聴かせる一方、
様々な箇所に中音域を生かしたコーラスがみられ、曲に厚みを加えています。

ジャケット・デザインからも想像がつくように、本作はプログレッシブな作品構成を誇ります。
名曲「The Spell」で壮大なラストを迎えるドラマティックな展開はプログレ・ファンも楽しめる内容です。

個人的にはユーライア・ヒープの最高傑作は次回作『The Magician's Birthday』だと思うのですが、
アルバム通した完成度や曲構成、コーラス・ワーク、ジャケット・デザイン等、
本作はどれを取っても最高傑作と呼ぶに相応しい内容であることは認めざるを得ません。

ハードロック・ファンに限らず、全てのロック・ファンにお薦め出来る名盤です。

uriah heepと言えば“七月の朝”が入ってる『対自核』が名盤であるがこの4thもそれに匹敵...いや凌駕してる名盤である。このアルバムから入ったので思い入れは強いのだが全9曲全く隙がナイ!掴みの一曲目にアコースティックをもってくる時点で参りました。軽快なシャッフルナンバー“Easy Livin'”やラストの幻想的な“The Spell”そしてドラマティックな“Circle Of Hands”ユーライアヒープに興味を持ったら本作からどうぞ。ベース好きな人にもお薦めデス。

ユーライアヒープのアルバムを購入する時に注意しなければならないのは、彼らは決してプログレではないという前提で買うことである。
レコード・ジャケットのデザインの素晴らしさと怪しげなグループ名だけで判断してはいけない。
彼らをプログレと呼んでしまうと、クイーンもプログレと呼ばなければならないかも知れない。
最高傑作と評価の高い当アルバムにしても同様。
当時の音楽シーン自体がプログレの影響を受けていたという範疇でのプログレっぽさと前置きが必要。
ヒープで最もプログレっぽいのは、ケンヘンズレーの存在であり、キーボードの音色がオルガン的でクラシックな奏法を取り入れているからだと思う。
メイン・ヴォーカルは完全なハードロックのパターンであり、ドラムやベースの刻み方も典型的なハード・ロックである。
プログレのエッセンスとしては、小生は「ソールズベリー」のほうが強いと思う。
但し、一曲ごとの完成度の高さは当アルバムが最上位なのかも知れない。
１曲目、来日記念でシングル・カットされた「魔法使い」がその後の活躍を予感させてくれる。
