70sハードロック系のコンテキストでは間違いなく重要グループとして挙げられるであろうユーライア・ヒープの'71年作品。
重く、暗澹としたサウンドが轟々と鳴り響く中、D.バイロンのメタリックなハイトーン・ヴォーカルはこれに負ける事無く、十分に歌っています。HR/HM名曲の1つに挙げられる[3]は言うまでも無く、そのメロディセンスに単なる轟音バンドとは明確に一線を画すユーライア・ヒープのよさがあるのだろうと思います。
ディープ・パープル、レッド・ツェッペリン、ブラック・サバス、、、どのバンドも優れたアイデンティティと、オリジナリティ、コンポーズ/ライティング・センスは備えていました。そんな中でのユーライア・ヒープの"それ"は何なのでしょうか。
個人的には、ブルース・ロックを基調としたヘヴィネスやラウドネスの延長ではなく、何と言いますか、ヨーロッパ的な音楽観やコンセプトなのかなぁと思います。
勿論、ブルースロック的な発想やアプローチが皆無という事ではありませんが、その表出度/含有度といった部分が他の同系バンドよりも多く、また、その出し方を上手く心得ていたのではないかと思うのです。
オリジナル収録曲に加えて、アウトテイクやセッションバージョンなども含まれている点はお買い得感がありますが、本作がコンセプトアルバムであれば、そこは考え物かと思います。
＃無論、それを含んで聴く分に罪はありませんが(^^;

７１年発表、ユーライア・ヒープの３rdアルバム。邦題は『対自核』。
ブリティッシュ・ハード・ロックを代表するバンド、ユーライア・ヒープの出世作である本作。
ブリティッシュ・ハードというとレッド・ツェッペリンやディープ・パープル、ブラック・サバス辺りが
真っ先に挙げられますが、音楽的に最もブリティッシュ・ハードらしいバンドはこのユーライア・ヒープだと思います。
ケン・ヘンズレーの弾くキーボードをフィーチャーしたスタイルと、
ファルセットのコーラスが独特の迫力を持つサウンド、
そして、名曲「July Morning」に象徴される、ドラマティックな展開を見せる曲構成。
最もアメリカン・ハードらしいバンド、グランド・ファンクと比較すると、
イギリス勢とアメリカ勢の音楽的な違いがよく分かります。

この『Look At Yourself』はユーライア・ヒープをメジャーに押し上げた記念すべき作品です。
キャッチーなタイトル曲は爽快そのもので、当時ヒットしたのも頷けます。

「Tears In My Eyes」で聴けるスライド・ギターや「I Wanna Be Free」等のへヴィなギター・リフも印象的ですが、
やはりメインとなるのはキーボードで、ハードなナンバーではギターに負けないほどへヴィに、
「What Should Be Done」のような穏やかな曲では包み込むような広がりを、
そして、本作の目玉とも言える10分にも及ぶ大曲「July Morning」では鳥肌モノのリフを聴かせます。

本作と『Demons And Wizards』『The Magician's Birthday』の３作品を
ユーライア・ヒープの出世３部作と評されることが多いです。
そのため、まだヒープを聴いたことのない方は本作から聴きはじめることをお薦めします。
そして、もし気に入ったなら続く２作品を順に聴いてみてください。
一般的に最高傑作とされているのは次回作『Demons And Wizards』です。

ジャケがオリジナルの鏡+ボーナストラックに惹かれて、この再発版で買いなおしました。ヒープ作品の中で一番キャッチーで、なおかつ名曲揃いということで高い評価を得た作品ですが、改めてこのバンドの持つ良質のメロディ+リフのセンスに脱帽しました。

他のアルバムの随所に感じられるプログレ的要素は影を潜め、ハードロック的印象が強いアルバムですが、うねるオルガン、ファズギター、分厚いコーラス、とヒープらしさは更に磨きがかかっています。
