   大柄な白人女性が皮を剥がれて殺されるという、残酷な事件が多発していた。捜査に行き詰まったFBIは、獄中のレクター博士に協力を求めて犯人像を割りだすよう、訓練生のクラリスに命令する。レクター博士は、自らの患者を9人も惨殺して食べた、天才精神科医だった。
   紳士で知的な殺人鬼、レクター博士。この極端な二面性をもった役柄を、アンソニー・ホプキンスが実に魅力的に演じている。ジョディー・フォスター演じる純粋で実直なクラリスと、レクターとの人物対比が秀逸だ。後半に登場する狂気の染みついた犯人の家は、その情景描写だけで十分に気味が悪い。そこでの緊張感あふれるクライマックスシーンは、まさに映画の醍醐味といえる。
   アカデミー賞の主要5部門を独占。サイコサスペンス映画として、1つの頂点を極めた作品である。（ビーンズおがわ）

　言わずもがなの名作。アカデミー賞主要部門総なめも記憶に新しい。本編の映像，音声は素晴らしく，特典ディスクも内容充実。永久保存版だ。
　興味深いエピソードも多く知ることができる。監督やクラリス，そしてレクター博士の第一候補者は・・・。ここに書くのは簡単だが，是非特典ディスクを観てほしい。
　今観ても全く古さは感じない。「ゴッドファーザー」等と肩を並べるマスターピースだとホプキンスは語っていたが，同感だ。名作に相応しい音楽もある。
　恥ずかしい話だが，リアルタイムで観た時は，レクターがエンディングで誰を追っていたのかを見落としていた。最後まで気の抜けない，不気味な余韻の残る作品だ。
