アートペッパーは白人アルトサックスの名プレーヤーとして有名です。本作「モダンアート」は、そのアートの三大傑作と評価される一枚であり、多くのジャズファンにお聴きいただきたい好盤です。アルトサックスと言えばまずチャーリーパーカーですが、黒人である彼の特徴は、緊張感溢れる起伏に富んだ激しいプレイです。しかし、ペッパーのアルトのトーンはメロディアスで暖かみがあるのが特徴です。プレイぶりもマイルドで落ち着いたブローをします。その分パーカーよりもジャズ初心者の方には聴き易いはずだと思います。とは言えじっくりと聞き込めば聞き込むほどに味わい深くなる程にディープなプレイぶりでもあります。「蝶のように舞い、蜂のように刺す」という表現がありますが、これがピッタリ来るような華麗でヘビーな音触があります。ワビサビが分かる日本人にピッタリくるような微に入り細にいるナイスなアルトです。世間様で有名な「With Rythm Section」よりぐっと来ること請け合いです。

これまで発売されていたCD版"Modern Art"はアラジン･セッション･シリーズとしてのものであり，いろいろなテイクが入っているのはよいとしても，録音日順にこだわるあまり，LP盤の”Modern Art"とは曲順が違うという決定的な欠陥があった。本作はLPで言えばA面冒頭の"Blues In"に始まり，B面の終曲"Blues Out"で終るという形式こそが本来の鑑賞されるべき姿であり，この限定廉価盤はオリジナルどおりの曲目，曲順に準拠していることが何よりも喜ばしい。CD版の曲順への違和感をおぼえていた評者は本作を長年LPで聞き続けてきたが，これでようやくCDに切り替えることができそうだ。もちろんPepper屈指の名作である本盤が1,500円で入手できること自体が素晴らしいことであることは言うまでもないが，"Blues In"からリスナーの心をそれこそわしづかみにして離さない名演の数々である。この作品のクォリティはまさに尋常ではない。素晴らしい。

アート・ペッパーは、ジャズをかじっている人なら誰もが認める名サックスプレイヤーです。なので、名盤と名のつくものは他にも何枚もあります。ではなぜこのアルバムが特別なものなのか、それはこのアルバムが一番人間くさい魅力を持っているからなのかなと思います。

１、２曲目、そして（オリジナルでは）ラストの８曲目。ペッパーのアルトサックスとベースとの会話。酔いつぶれた翌日の、なんともけだるい気分での一服、、、漂う煙、、、うつろな目、、、半開きの唇、、、
