ジャズ･ピアノが根強い人気を博しているのはビル・エバンス以降のモードを消化し、さらにスタンダードな演奏が心地よいキース･ジャレットやマッコイ･タイナーなどのテクニシャンの存在に拠る部分が大きい。ピアノの表現の幅はソロからデュオ、トリオ、４，５といったコンボ、さらにはオーケストラのキーマンまですべての演奏形態にまで及ぶ。それだけに音楽の全体を支配するバーサータルな存在なのであろう。従って、常に革新、変革していくバックボーンとして関わってきたピアノはますます重要度をキープしていくことと思われる。しかし、もう一つ忘れてはならないこととして、モダン･ジャズの黎明期にピアノが果たした役割である。パーカー、ガレスピーというホーンの2大イノベーターの影に隠れがちだったが、セロニアス･モンクとパウエルの残したピアノの異なった可能性である。モンクはさておき、パウエルの左手のコンピングと右手のメロディ･ライン、インプロビゼーションの天才的なひらめきはビ･バップからモダン･ピアノ・トリオへの道を開いてくれた。40年代末から53年までの演奏を集めた本アルバムこそ、モダン・ジャズ･ピアノのスタンダード盤として愛聴されるべき傑作アルバムである。

BirdとはCharlie Parkerの愛称。BudとBird、共にビバップ革命の巨人であり戦友ともいえます。本作はParker没後約２年半後、１９５７年１０月~１９５８年１月の録音、Bud絶頂期の鬼気迫る演奏では無いものの、作曲家としてのParkerへ敬意に満ちた内容です。それは曲を通じて対話しているかのようにも思えます。
BUD POWELL : piano, GEORGE DUVIVIER : bass, ARTHUR TAYLOR : drums
全作曲: CHARLIE PARKER (但し2はD. GILLESPIEと共作、14はD. GILLESPIE - K. CLARKE)
