35年ほど前にLPを購入し、人生の半分以上を費やしてずっと聴き続けてきた超絶的名盤。美しいメロディはもとより、独特の楽器編成によるアレンジがたとえようもなく素晴らしい。バカラックの凄さは、本来イントロ的な曲想や、曲のサブ的な役割を演ずるはずのリズムやパーカッションを、楽曲のメインストリームへ押し上げた独自のアレンジにあると言えるのではないか。とりわけ、『去りし時を知って』、『パシフィック・コースト・ハイウェイ』はその頂上を極めた逸品。『メイク・イット・イージー・オン・ユアセルフ』では、若いときのバカッラク本人のボーカルが聴けるのも嬉しい。「バカラック・サウンド」の真骨頂に接するには、ディオンヌものより、このセルフカバーを聴くべし。

バカラックの作品には、多様なバージョンが存在する。
このＣＤは、バカラック自身がピアノを弾き、オーケストラを
指揮したと思われるもの。
ディオンヌ・ワーウィックなどに代表される歌モノもいいけど、
オーケストラ版は楽器の使い方、ダイナミックかつ繊細なアレンジが
秀逸。おそらく、バカラック自身の手によるものだろう。

ただし、他に優れたベストアルバムが多数あるので、星４つ。
