前作に比べメロディが重厚になり、ただ美しさを追求した
という感じの前作より力強い音楽になってます。
このアルバムを聴いてから前作を聴くと物足りなさを感じ
るほどです。１stがベストというアーティストは結構多い
ですが、キーンは確実に進化していると思います。
メロディが重厚になった分、前作のような心地よさを求め
ている方には受け入れられない部分があるのかと思います
が、基本的には前作の延長線上にあるアルバムだと思うの
で、前作を聴いて良いと思った方はこのアルバムも気に入
るのではないでしょうか。前作で物足りなさを感じた方は
こちらの方がオススメです。

当方はオアシス世代ですが、過去のバンドのまね事の域から脱した感じがしなかったので、あまり同時代の音楽を聴かずにビートルズや60〜70年代のロックばかり聴いて育ちました。下のレビューでオアシスに手を出してはみたものの…と書いておられた方と世代は違えど、思う感想は似たようなものだったわけです。しかし世の中はそんなに狭くないようです。少し探せばいいバンドが表れてくるのですから。

本作はデビューから2作目。ビートルズ（というよりもジョージ・ハリスンやジェフ・リン）的なUKロック王道のギターと、2000年代に原点回帰したU2のようなエモーショナルな要素が巧みにブレンドされた、懐かしくも前を向く姿勢が感じられる小気味よいサウンドになっております。モロU2っぽい(2)もいいのですが、個人的にいいなと思ったのは(3)〜(5)の流れ。(3)はELOでジェフ・リンがやりそうなアップテンポのバラード。(4)は最初のコーラスがビージーズを彷彿とさせ、思わず胸が懐かしくなります。(5)は繊細なメロディと適度に歪んだ演奏のコントラストが綺麗です。

どの曲もつかみの部分はロックの遺産を踏襲していますが、盛り上がりの部分は普遍的に甘酸っぱく響く美メロばかり。歌詞も感傷的な段階で踏みとどまっていて、根暗すぎず陰鬱すぎずに聴きこめます（この点でColdplayはどうかと思います）。学生時代の揺れ動きやすい心にすーっと入っていきそうな曲ばかりですね。ロックに興味が出だした若い方にも、ビートルズ時代から聴いてきた方にも安心して聴けると思います。どちらかといえばビートルズ〜ソフトロックの流れが好きな方にお勧めです。

何が違うのか？どこが違うのか？どう違うのか？
問われれば答えに窮する。
英国のギターレストリオ・Keaneの2ndアルバム。

一瞬の煌めきでもって峻烈に感覚を刻んだデビュー盤でのサウンドは、叙情系UKロックバンドの傍流であるようでいて、実は全く異なる地平に存在する鮮烈なモノであった。そのロマンチックでノスタルジックな音景、そしてとびきり素晴らしいメロディは、あらゆるヒネクレ者さえ組み伏せてしまうような力強さ、新鮮さをもって鳴り響いた。

前置きが長くなった。今作である。オープニングトラック"Atlantic"。光の届かない、しかしどこか柔らかな闇を思わせる豊潤なエレクトロニカのヴェールの中を、さらにその幻想の度合いを強めたメロディが泳いでいく。どうやってもワウギターに聴こえる鍵盤音を豪快に鳴らすTr2、重みを増したビートとエキゾチックなコーラスが溢れ出るTr.4、再び"深海"へと聴き手を誘うインストナンバーTr.8など、新しい世界を切り開かんとするメンバーの姿勢が随所で感じ取れる作品だ。

しかし、デビュー作で鮮やかに五感を揺り動かしたあの感触がここには無い。素晴らしいメロディを紡ぎ出すことの出来るバンドというのは決して多くはないが、無二ではない。KeaneをKeaneたらしめていたもの。正攻法のアプローチから巻き起こされる音の奇蹟。そんな昂揚の源を自分はこのバンドには求めているのかもしれない。
