5.0 out of 5 stars 抜群の録音でパーカーを味わいつくせ, 2006/10/19
チャーリー・パーカーが Verve に残した作品の中でも最高なのがこの "Bird and Diz" だ。パーカーとガレスピーの黄金タッグにセロニアス・モンクがからむトンでもない名盤である。何よりも録音が抜群によく、パーカーの艶のある音色をどっぷり味わうことができる。

しかしこのアルバムについて昔から相も変わらず言われ続けているのが、「ドラムの人選ミス」だ。「スイング派」のバディ・リッチだから駄目だというわけだが、そういうことをほざくやつは、そもそもスイング・ジャズのドラミングがどういうものかまったくわかっていない。ジーン・クルーパを聴いたことがないのか。「コンセプトの違い」って何だよ。

このアルバムのリッチのプレイは、バッキングからソロまで、フレージングがもう「ウンパ・ウンパ・ウンパ・ウンパ」の完全なバップ・ドラミングだ。しかもかなり上等な演奏である。おかげでものすごいドライブ感が生まれていて、どう聴いても、パーカーもガレスピーもモンクもごきげんで演っている。少なくとも同じ Verve の "Now's the time"（ドラムはマックス・ローチ）よりは成功している。アタマで決めつけずに音を聴くべきだ。まあ、ドラムがロイ・ヘインズだったら、それはそれで面白かったとは思うが。

ジャズについて語る人って、ベースまでは理解できるんだが、ドラムについてはてんで無知・無理解なんだ。

Verveレーベルにおける貴重なバードとディズの競演盤。ビ・バップの立役者の二人は数多くのセッションを残し、そのすさまじい演奏によってモダン・ジャズの歴史の基礎を築いていった。二人の天才は、性格、生い立ち、生涯があまりに異なっているが、それだけにその邂逅の意義は計り知れない。この競演でもいずれ劣らぬアドリブを展開し、ビ・バップとはこのようなものだという手本を示している。またバックの共演者がセロニアス・モンクとバディ・リッチというのも異色で面白い。超ユニーク・ピアノと超テクニシャン・ドラムのミスマッチがバードとディズの天才ぶりをさらに引き立てているように思える。モダン・ジャズの古典といえるアルバムである。赤いモノクロームのジャケットも時代を感じさせてくれ、捨てがたい味わいである。
