コルトレーンの奥さん、Naima(同名の曲のモデル)がプライベートに録音していたものが音源のため、非常に荒々しい作りのライブアルバム。ただ、Gambit得意のリマスターを施され、Blue Noteでリリースされていた頃より音質アップ。しかも、これまでCD化されていない、「Ruby My Dear」と「Nutty」のライブバージョンをボーナストラックとして追加しています。コルトレーンの息子ラビが、有名なカーネギーホールでの演奏よりも好きだと言ったライブです。

モンクとコルトレーンのプライベートライブ録音。当然のことながら音質は良くない。でも凄いライブだ。１９５８年同時モンクとトレーンがここまでとんがっていたことを伝える。彼らが契約していたレコーデイング会社が録音することが出来なかった、ジャズ史の空白を埋める大変貴重な作品だ。当時マイルスクインテットを首になったトレーンを迎えてくれたのがモンク。彼の元でトレーンはしごかれて、シーツオブサウンドと呼ばれる音のばらまき奏法を身につけたと言われる。やはり、ここでのトレーンの熱さというか音数の多さには圧倒される。パワフルなトレーンを従えたモンクも凄い。自信満々の堂々たるプレイぶりで、自作曲を縦横無尽に弾きまくる。ライブというだけではなく、これだけ危なっかしくて一体感のある演奏は奇跡的だ。１０年以上前にブルーノートからリリースされた世間をあっと言わせた発掘音源（確かＮＨＫでも特集番組が作られた）を、イギリスのコレクターレーベルGambitが再編集したもの。曲順が当日の演奏とうりに変更されている。未発表曲も一曲追加されている。音質は余り変わらないとういか、変えようがなかったようですが、ドラムス、ベースの低音部がだいぶクリアーになった。ブルーノート盤をお持ちの方も新たなる発見があるはずです。

　1957年の初夏にセロニアス･モンクが様々な苦難を乗り越えて、NYのファイヴ・スポット・カフェに出演を果たしたときのメンバーは、ジョン･コルトレーン(ts)、ウィルバー･ウェア(b)そしてシャドウ･ウィルソン(ds)。このときの演奏はNY周辺のジャズ関係者に大変な衝撃を与えたと、リロイ・ジョーンズをはじめ色々な人が書き残している。そしたら当然ライヴレコーディングをするのが自然な流れであるのだが、唯一のネックはコルトレーンが当時PRESTIGEの専属であったこと。RIVERSIDEのプロデューサーのオリン･キープニューズがPRESTIGEのオーナーのボブ・ワインストックにお伺いをたてたところ、条件付の許可が出た。その条件とは、次のコルトレーンのアルバムにモンクをサイドマンとして参加させること。ところがモンクがこれを拒絶したために、この話はお流れになり、このスーパーセッションはエリック･ドルフィー言うところの「空中に消えるだけの音楽」となってしまった。

　ところが、である。このライヴをひそかにポータブルレコーダーで録音した人がいたことが近年判明した。その人とは、コルトレーンの最初の夫人のナイーマさんである。そのテープのありかをつきとめてマスタリングしてBLUE NOTEから発表したのが、かのマイケル・カスクーナで93年のことである。しかし残念ながらこのCDの音質はガマンの限度を超える悲惨なもので、入手した喜びも束の間、聴いてガッカリしたことが懐かしい。

　そして今回の再発である。英国の海賊盤専門のGAMBITからリリースされた。これは合格です。カスクーナ版をはるかに上回る音質になっているので、私同様ガッカリさんのモンクファンは、絶対に買い替えたほうがよいでしょう。しかも1曲多いし。ちなみに録音データはカスクーナ版は「57年夏」になっていますが、本作は「58年9月11日」となっています。ベースがアーメッド･アブダル･マリクで、ドラムスがロイ･ヘインズとクレジットされているので、本作のほうが正しいと思われます。ジャケも本作のほうが上出来なのだが、57年のメンバーの写真を使っているので、ドラマーはS･ウィルソンが写っているのがご愛嬌。
