ブルース・スプリングスティーンという人間の新たな才能を感じることのできるアルバムです。　彼のトレードマークであるロックやソロ弾き語りとはまた別の味を楽しめます。　軽快な曲が多いので、アルバムを聴いているとあっという間に最後の曲に辿り着いてしまいます。　おそらく彼が幼少時代に聴いて育ったであろうルーツ音楽への敬意を感じることのできる貴重な1枚です。　彼の歌うブルーグラスがこれほどまでにハマるとは･･･

｢Born in the USA｣や｢明日なき暴走｣のイメージが強すぎて，未だに労働者階級の代弁者のような言われ方をしていますが，その｢根っこ｣の部分はフォークやカントリーにあるのではないでしょうかね。
今回のアルバムはその｢根っこ｣の音楽です。愉快で楽天的で，古き良きアメリカを感じられるカバー曲が並んでいます。一見，あまり創作的ではないようにも思えます。
しかし，このアルバムは｢We shall overcome｣なのです。かつてこの歌がどのような状況でどのような人々が歌ってきたのか。そして今のアメリカの状況。最近のブルーススプリングスティーンの言動，など考えると，一見脳天気なアルバムに実は強いメッセージが込められているのが分かります。
いいアルバムです。

これほど楽しげに演奏し歌うスプリングスティーンを聞いたことがない。同時に、彼のすべてのアルバムに一貫している「アメリカの夢」「約束の地」への思い、それに反骨精神は、このアルバムでも健在である。開拓者時代の古い歌を元気よく歌うことで、混迷するアメリカ社会に、建国時代の理想を思い出させようとしているかのようだ。目を閉じて聞いていると60年代前半のフォークリバイバルの興奮が蘇ってくる。
