７９年作品。
録音は「at武道館」ヒット前に済んでいたが、あまりに武道館が売れ続けたため発売が大幅に延期された。
プロデューサーは２nd、３rdに引き続きトム・ワーマンが担当。武道館の成功に続いて、本作も大ヒットとなった。
基本的には前作の延長線上だが、より洗練されたサウンドプロダクションが印象的。特に目立つのはストリングスを随所に使っていること。曲はＭ４，９のヘヴィな面とその他の非常にポップな面がバランス良く入っている。
ポップサイドのそのキャッチーさ加減はとんでもないレベルで、聞いた瞬間に頭の中でリフレインしそうな曲が揃っている。そのうえ、キレもいいと来てるので文句の付けようがない。
チープトリックの最高傑作に挙げる人も多いのではないだろうか？

私は後追い世代なので、70年代のcheap trickに特別な思い入れがあるわけではありません。全盛期最後の作品all shook upと、次から始まる低迷期の4作品、復活してから現在に至るまでの作品の方が圧倒的に好きです。
in colorと本作は一聴したとき、beatlesにあまりに似すぎていると感じ、拒絶をしていました。別にbeatlesが好きなわけでもないので。
しかし、cheap trickのliveを観て過去の曲、特に上の70年代の2作からの曲を聴くと、あまりにパワフルすぎて戦慄が走った記憶があります。

それからというものの、特に本作を聴きこんでいくたびに素晴らしさが身に染みてきます。
やはり、アルバムの充実度からしても最高傑作と認めざるを得ません。

因みにin colorも潔くて素晴らしい作品なので、聴いてみてください。
