パーヴォ・ヤルヴィはエストニアの指揮者ネーメ・ヤルヴィの実子。本盤はドイツ・カンマーフィルとのベートーヴェン録音第1弾となったもの。第3番は2005年、第8番は2004年に収録されている。

現代、ベートーヴェンの交響曲を録音するにあたって、当然数多くある録音の中の一つとして存在感あるものであるために、様々な試行が重ねられると思う。それが指揮者にとってどこまで本来的なものだったのか、私にもときどき悩む場合がある（私が勝手に悩んでいるのですが）。ただ、結果として様々に面白い提案が現れてくるわけだし、それを聴けるのはもちろん楽しいわけで、この録音もそういった「ニーズに合った」録音といえる。つまり個性的で面白い。

まず楽器であるが、トランペットとティンパニにピリオド楽器を用いているらしい。これは、さらっと書いたけれどかなり特殊なことだ。いったい何ゆえか？と思うけれど、聴いてみるるとティンパニに関しては、かなりクローズアップしている。これはおそらく弦などの人数を少人数にしているということだと思うが、ティンパニの生々しい音を使って、あちこちで「決め打ち」気味に活躍させる。実にリズム感のある音楽となる。また金管の音色も現代楽器のような伸びよりも、多少不安定さがあっても鋭さを求めており、その表現に適した楽器をチョイスしたらこうなった、という感じである。その合理主義的精神も見事と思う。そうしてトントントントンと小気味のいい軽い音色で音楽を走らせながら、木管中心に歌わせるコントロールも巧みだ。これはもう深く悩まずに反応にまかせて楽しめばよいのだろう！・・でも終わって感想を言葉にしようとすると、ちょっと考えるところはあるわけです。

難しいお話しは致しません。このＣＤは、ビールかワインを飲みながら聴くと必ずあなたを恍惚の世界に誘う演奏です。特に、ツェッペリンなどのハードロック嗜好の方に聴いてほしいな〜。ティンパニ（バンドでのドラム？）がドンドコ随所に鳴り響き、管楽器は歌いまくり（バンドでのヴォーカル？）、テンポは現代人が“最適”とするものです。まあとにかく、クラシックって言うと、「古くさい」「野暮ったい」「聴いててだるい」というような印象が出るでしょうが、そのような印象をバッサリと捨て去るＣＤでございます。是非ともロック愛好家（特にツェッペリンファン）の方達に捧げたいＣＤでございます。最後に、小中学生に絶対聴かせたいな〜。クラシック音楽の印象がガラリと変わるんだろうな〜。

ヤルヴィのエロイカ。カルロス・クライバーの4番以来の感動でした。ヤルヴィのやりたいことによく反応しているオーケストラ。しかもミス無く、時に繊細に、時におおらかに歌い上げます。解像度の良いヘッドホンを使って聴くと、ヤルヴィの指示が副旋律に回っているパートも含めて全てのパートに行き渡っていることに気づきます。まさにワオ！＝発見の瞬間が多々あります。団員の練習量も並大抵の物ではなかったと思います。構成が小規模なだけに、一人一人の楽器の音がそれぞれ分かります。そんな中で特に木管群が良いです。逆にティンパニは目立ちすぎのような気がしました。でも、星7つ付けたいくらいの宝物です。
