いやー楽しい。聴きすすむにつれて幸福感がいや増してくるアルバム。

基本的にマントランの「十八番」をゴージャスなオーケストラアレンジのバックで歌い上げるというスタンスのアルバム（"Because You Are All Heart" だけは新録音）。…ということで、硬派なファンなら「チャレンジが無いぞ！」という不満はあるかも。

# いや私はトリの "Birdland" で充分満腹ですが

しかし、これはマントランにとっては「リターンマッチ」なアルバムでもあると思うのだな。"Vibrate" とか "The Quietude", "The Offbeat Avenues" を聴くとつくづくそう感じる。過去のアルバムで魅力を充分に伝えられなかった鬱憤を見事に晴らしているわけしょ。これは。

さて、冒頭に述べたこの幸福感、なんかデジャビュだよなぁ…　と、思いを巡らしてたら思い当たりました。ハリウッド全盛時代に作られた音楽映画（『巨星ジークフリート』など）を観たときのそれだよね…　と。

ジャズ・コーラス・グループのトップに君臨しているマンハッタン・トランスファーが、過去の作品をオーケストラと共演してセルフカバーしたアルバムです。
３０年以上のキャリアを誇るマントラの代表曲ばかりですから、聴いているだけで心身ともにリラックスできます。ゴージャスな演奏ですね。

なんといってもマントラのアカペラの代表作とも言える「バークレー・スクエアのナイチンゲール」にオーケストラを絡めた演奏がとても良いですね。
ジーン・ピュアリングの元曲のコーラスアレンジを残しながら、シンフォニックな趣を加え、前作よりもよりオシャレになった感じです。以前の吹込みよりも成熟した４人のコーラスは素晴らしく、他のグループの追従を許しません。
何回も何回も繰り返し聴きました。飽きることのない完成度を誇っている作品ですね。

「トゥ・ユー」、「エンブレイサブル・ユー」、「ザッツ・ザ・ウェイ・イット・ゴーズ」のどの曲もエレガントで大人の落着きが演奏から感じられます。シンフォニック・オーケストラに良くあった選曲だと思いました。唯一の新録音の「ビコーズ・ユー・アー・オール・ハート」も気に入りました。大人の音楽ですね。

最大のヒット曲ともいえる「バードランド」のリズムの切れ味は相変わらず抜群でした。ボリュームたっぷりの豪華な演奏で堪能しました。勿論「ルート66」や「キャンディ」という代表曲も新しいセルフカバーによって新鮮な感覚に包まれました。

以前よりも更に洗練されたハーモニーとなっています。さすが世界最高水準のクローズドハーモニーです。これを聞かずにジャズコーラスを語ることはできません。
