モノクロ映画ばかりの日本映画界で、虹男のシーンのみをカラーで映像化し話題となったカルト映画。虹の研究をする物理学者の当主、黒猫を可愛がる妻、奇妙な色彩の絵を描く画家の息子が暮らす魔耶家。彼らは次々と「虹男だ!」と絶叫して殺害され…。

当時モノクロだった日本映画界に部分的にカラーで映像化した『虹男』は、とても衝撃を与えた。幻覚の表現として部分的にカラーの映像が取り入れられているので、物語の怪奇性ともあいまって、絶大なインパクトのカルト映画。

　ある科学者の家にて、別荘の火事を経て「あっ虹だ！」と言い残して死んでいく奇怪な連続殺人事件が起きていた。重要参考人と友人だった女性記者と恋仲である男性記者の珍カップルと鬼警部が捜査を開始するが、真相は意外な方向へ・・・？

　１９８０年代までの特撮ものの専門書には、ジャケットと同じ変な男の絵が必ず掲載されていた。旧・大映＆東宝の透明人間と東宝の変身人間ものの感覚で見たほとんどの方は、「これが虹男か・・・」と思った方が多いだろう。
　１９９０年代に旧・大映でＬＤ化によって日の目を見たが、不燃化等のフィルム散在によってカラーフィルムが現存していなかった・・・。
　ＬＤ化を機にカラー映像を再現しているが、こうした裏事情を考えれば苦渋の選択だったろう。「肝心な部分｛カラーフィルム｝がないのでソフト化を封印します」という最悪な事態にならなかった事を考えれば、まだ生き残りの運があったといえよう。

　出演者も東宝特撮路線でも活躍した小林桂樹氏や「四谷怪談」ものの最高傑作『東海道四谷怪談』の若杉須美子氏といった意外な出演者や、見明凡太郎氏・北原義雄（郎）氏等の昭和『ガメラ』シリーズの常連も大挙出演している。
　また音楽には無名時代の伊福部　昭氏が参加しているが、ノークレジットで円谷英二特技監督が参加していたというのも興味深い。

　本作と同じフジカラーを使った、松竹の『カルメン故郷に帰る』より２年前に作られたパートカラー〔総ならぬ一部・天然色〕映画。

　『少年探偵団』か２時間サスペンスの感覚で、じっくりと鑑賞してほしい。

原作を先に読んでいたので、結末にズッコケた。
推理小説でのクライマックスである「最後のどんでん返し」の部分が、バッサリ切られている。
そのため、本当なら主人公のはずの新聞記者（小林桂樹）は、事件に振り回されるだけの、いわゆる狂言回しにしか見えない。
原作通りなら、この映画での犯人は真犯人ではなく、事件の裏に隠れた真相を主人公が指摘するストーリーなのだが…。
正直、がっかりさせられた。
なお、ついでに記せば、伊福部昭は戦時下すでに作曲家として一家を成しており、戦後は1946年から東京音楽学校（現東京藝術大学）作曲科で教鞭をとり、芥川也寸志や黛敏郎を教えていた（この２人は1950年代には映画音楽にも進出し活躍する）のだから、決して「無名」ではなかったのだが。

怪奇大作戦にあい通じる味わい。陳腐さがいいんです。昔読んだ古びた図書館にあったぼろぼろの少年ミステリーの挿絵のような映画です。癖になります。懐かしいです。
