６７年発表、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドのデビュー作にしてロック史上に残る名盤。
このバンドはルー・リードが在籍していたバンドとして有名で、本作はドイツ人女性のニコを迎えて作られた作品です。荒々しさと穏やかさを兼ね備えた退廃的なサウンドは６０年代後半という時代を強く感じさせます。バナナのジャケットは世界で最も有名なジャケットの一つです。

意表をついた美しい名曲「日曜の朝」にはじまり、続くのは後のパンクを想わせるシンプルで攻撃的なロック・ナンバー「僕は待ち人」です。ジョン・ケイルの弾くヴィオラの音色がオリエンタルな雰囲気を醸し出す「毛皮のヴィーナス」「黒い天使の死の歌」も秀逸。また、ニコのハスキー・ボイスが意外な程いい味を出している「宿命の女」「ユア・ミラー」も注目です。「オール・トゥモローズ・パーティーズ」もニコがリード・ボーカルを取る曲で、Ａ面のエンディング的な曲です。本作はＡ面とＢ面で違った色合いがあるので、意識して聴くことをお薦めします。「ヘロイン」からがＢ面です。

ヴェルヴェットが他のバンドとは明らかに異なることを感じさせるのは、ノイズを利用した「ヘロイン」と「ヨーロピアン・サン」です。はたして名曲と呼んでいいのか、問題作と呼ぶべきなのか。どちらにせよこの２曲の後のバンドに与えた影響は計り知れないものがあります。

また、本作は歌詞も物議を醸すなど、いろんな意味で見所の多い作品です。永遠の名盤であると同時に、わりと聴きやすい作品でもあるので、詳しく内容を知らずにジャケットに惹かれて買っても全く損はありません。最近の音楽しか聴いたことのない方は初めはちょっと戸惑いを覚えるかもしれませんが、これが普遍的な魅力を放つ“時代の音”です。ロックを語る上で、避けては通れない作品です。

とにかく作品全体に漂う退廃的な空気にその魅力は尽きる。
優しささえ感じるメロディから始まるこの作品は、時として暴力的で押さえきれない欲望の顔をのぞかせる。
この「バナナ」の完成したときこそまさに60年代のロック、いや音楽の歴史そのものに深く刻まれる瞬間であったと僕は思えてならない。
