スティーヴ・マリオット（リード・ボーカル、ギター、キーボード）
ピーター・フランプトン（リード・ギター）
グレッグ・リドリー（ベース）
ジェリー・シャーリー（ドラムス）

ブリティッシュ・モッズ・バンド、スモール・フェイセスのヴォーカリスト、スティーヴ・マリオットと、ザ・ハードのギタリスト、ピーター・フランプトンによって結成されたスーパー・バンド。5作目のライヴ・アルバムを最後にピーターが脱退。スティーヴのブルース志向がより強くバンドのサウンドに反映されていき、英国産70年代ブルース・ロックを代表する存在になった。90年代にスティーヴとピーターによる再結成の機運が高まったが、スティーヴが不慮の火災によって焼死し、帰らぬ人となった。

73年発表の作品。アナログ盤では2枚組だった本作品は,A面がスティーヴ・マリオットによるオリジナル曲集。B面がゴスペルのカヴァー曲集。C面がアコースティックな作品集。D面は72年のグラスゴーでのライヴ集である。多芸ぶりを楽しめる作品。

　ハンブル・パイのイメージそのままの、熱くて黒い、ロックが聞けるのは実はここまで。これ以降、バンドはＳ・マリオット＆バックバンドとなってしまい、失速してしまうのだが、最後に2枚組（当時）の大作を届けてくれた。
　Ａ面がオリジナルの熱いロック、Ｂ面がカバーサイド、Ｃ面がアコースティック、Ｄ面がライブという構成は、このバンドの多彩な面を見せてくれる。白眉はＤ面のライブ！。特にストーンズの｢Honky Tonk Woman｣のカバーは、本家ストーンズよりも更に熱く黒いボーカルが堪能できる。僕はストーンズファンでもあるが、このナンバーに限って言えば、こちらの方が数段上だと断言する。

結局こういう路線に落ち着くんだという変な悟りみたいな境地にさせてくれるアルバムです。黒いほうが強いですもんねえ。「ホンキー・トンク・ウィメン」はストーンズ・ファンには悪いですが正直こっちのほうに軍配が上がると思います。すごいです。この熱気には圧倒されてしまいます。レコードのときは２枚組みだったのをＣＤで一気に聞きとおすと結構疲れます。しかも後半にライブ３曲をもってきておりこれがとどめです。

１９７３年に発売されたスティーブ・マリオットの個性が漲るロック・アルバム。スティーブ・マリオット率いるハンブル・パイは、ローリング・ストーンズ等と並ぶＲ＆Ｂ色の濃いロック・バンドである。ＬＰで発売された際には、ダブル・アルバムで、４面毎に趣向を変えたつくりになっていた。1~4までが、スティーブ・マリオットによるブルース・ロックで、これが何といってもイカしている。5~8は、Ｒ＆Ｂ、ゴスペル曲カヴァー集。5はアイク＆ティナ・ターナーの曲。6はレイ・チャールズの曲9~12は、再びスティーブ・マリオットによるアコースティック・サウンド。13~15は、ライブ録音。14はローリング・ストーンズの曲。全体的な印象としては、黒人音楽への傾倒を著すアルバムと言える。ロックのルーツを追い求めるような作品である。ブルース・ロック・ファンにとってはお薦め。
