「名盤」という言葉はこのアルバムのことのために用意された言葉ではないでしょうか？
あまりにも「いとしのレイラ」が有名すぎて、その曲目当てでこのアルバムを聴く人もいるでしょう。しかし、このアルバムは「レイラ」だけではありません。
このアルバムは全てが主役なのです。
一曲目の「アイ・ルックト・アウェイ」で静かにこのアルバムは幕を開けます。
そこから、コンセプトアルバムのような流れでこのアルバムは続きます。
このアルバムのコンセプトは一言で言うと「サザン・ロック」という言葉に集約されると思います。
それにしても、デュアン・オールマンが凄い。クラプトンとギターで闘っています。
そして、はっきり言ってデュアンの方が勝っている。
このアルバムはデレク・アンド・ドミノスのアルバムですが、僕は「デレク・アンド・ドミノス・アンド・デュアン」のアルバムとして、認識しています。
ロックというジャンルが好きで、まだこのアルバムを聴いたことがない方、是非このアルバムを手にとって聴いて見てください。１００％鳥肌が立ちますよ。

この名盤がクラプトンの作品の中で一番好きだ。奇跡的要素が重なり、必然と偶然が交差して完成した、彼の他の作品に類を見ないアルバムだ。　米国のザ・バンドの登場にクリームでやる気を無くし、自己主張むき出しの大物英国ミュージシャン達とのバンドに限界を感じ、さらにジョージ・ハリスンの紹介で知り合った、デラニー&ボニーや他のスワンプフィーリング溢れる米国ミュージシャン達とのステージを通じ、アメリカン・サウンドへのめりこんで行ったクラプトン。（１９６９〜１９７０年初頭）　その同じステージに元トラフィックのデイブ・メイスン、そしてジョージ・ハリスンもいたわけだが、結果的にこの英国人の３人は米国南部感覚いっぱいの名盤、「アローン・トゥゲザー」、「オールシングス・マスト・パス」、そして「レイラ」を残す事になる。（ドミノスのリズム隊は両方に参加、「オール・・」にはメイスン、クラプトンも参加している）
　 この３作品はどれも素晴らしいのだが、この「レイラ」にだけ特に強く感じられるのが、一つのグループとしての個々のメンバーの音への責任とまとまりだ。　クラプトンのスター性と実力、ソング・ライティングとソウルフィーリング溢れるボーカルで好サポートしたボビー・ホイットロック、そしてデュアン・オールマンという最高のライバルの参加は、クラプトンを大いに刺激した。　「デレク＆ザ・ドミノス」というバンド・サウンド（前述した他の２作品はソロ名義）のウネリを見事にまとめあげた名プロデューサーのトム・ダウトの力も重要だった。さらにパティ・ハリスンへの叶わぬ恋のジレンマを歌に込めた作品。これらの偶然が重なり、緊張感とポップ色の混ざりあった化学反応を誘発し、グルーブ感の溢れた、南部への熱き思いが詰まった珠玉の名盤となった。
　ちなみにその後何度もクラプトンのステージで演奏されたタイトル曲も、このアルバム収録以上の演奏は聴いたことがない。

つい最近まではあまり好きでなかったこの作品。「ゆるい」、と思っていた自分が馬鹿でした。クラプトンとデュアン・オールマンとのギターバトルはそれはもう激しい、激しい!!デュアンの縦横無尽なスライドギター、クラプトンのクリームの時とは違う「美しさ」をもったギターソロ。ギターーの手本になる作品とも言えるでしょう。ギタリスト必聴です。この二人が作り出したマジックは未来永劫語り継がれるでしょう。本当にスゴイです!!!!
またギターだけでなく魂の入ったクラプトンのヴォーカルも見所でしょう。70年代のクラプトンで唯一力のあるヴォーカルでしょう。それだけ恋をしていたのでしょう。
最後にこの作品の良さに気付かせてくれたデレク・トラックス(この人のスライドギターもスゴイ!!)のスライドギターが参加した2006年のライヴツアー、是非ともライヴ盤にしていただきたいと思います。
