MEMBER: エリック・クラプトン、ジンジャー・ベイカー、ジャック・ブルース
ブルース、ジャズを融合させた、インプロヴィゼーション溢れるサウンドを展開し、ジミ・ヘンドリックス、レッド・ツェッペリンにつながるブルース・ロック、ハード・ロックの基礎を作ったトリオ。ヤードバーズを脱退したクラプトンと、グラハム・ボンド・オーガニゼーションのメンバーだったジャック・ブルース、ジンジャー・ベイカーが1966年に結成。（ジャックはブルースブレイカーズでほんの短期間だがエリックといっしょに活動したことがある。またマンフレッド・マンにも所属していた。）1966年のデビュー・アルバム『フレッシュ・クリーム(FRESH CREAM)』はＵＫチャートでＴＯＰ１０入り。1967年には、ほとんどがオリジナル曲であるセカンド・アルバム『カラフル・クリーム(DISRAELI GEARS)』発表。
シングル「サンシャイン・オブ・ユア・ラヴ」がアメリカでヒット。1968年には2枚組みアルバム『クリームの素晴らしき世界(WHEELS OF FIRE)』を発表。全米1位を獲得し、シングル「ホワイト・ルーム」も大ヒット。世界的な人気を獲得した。しかし音楽性の違いから1968年末に解散を宣言。
翌1969年に発表されたラスト・アルバム『グッバイ・クリーム(GOODBYE CREAM)』も全米2位となり、その解散が惜しまれたが、クラプトンはベイカーとブラインド・フェイスを結成し、クリームの活動と完全に決別した。

６６年発表の１ｓｔ。グラハム・ボンド・オーガニゼーションに参加していたジンジャー・ベイカーとジャック・ブルース、ジョン・メイオールのブルース・ブレイカーズに参加していたエリック・クラプトンの３人によって結成された元祖ハード・ロック、元祖スーパー・グループ。ブルースのカヴァーなども含むものの、大半はジャック・ブルース作によるサイケ調のロック曲が並んでいる。次作と比べるとハード・ロック的な要素は薄く、サイケ・ポップ的な軽めの曲が多い気がする。そのためかツェッペリンなどと比べると明らかにインパクト不足ではあるものの、６０年代末のアート・ロック的な雰囲気を思いっきり体感できる作品であり、あの時代の空気が感じられる素晴しい作品だと思う。クラプトンは素晴しいギター・プレイを聞かせているものの、かなり控えめであり出番がくると思いっきり演奏するという感じだ。そのため各曲はかなりメリハリがついており、ダラダラと演奏をしている感じではないが、正直言ってクリームらしさも感じないのも確か。ブルース・ハープを渋く聞かせる曲も多い。曲は良いがエンジンはまだ掛り切っていないような印象だ。しかしこのコクのような旨味はたまらない。いぶし銀の青臭さとも言うべき矛盾した演奏がたまらないと思う。
リマスター音源のものは特に音質が素晴しく、とても６０年代の音とは思えない仕上がり。リマスターものの音源を特にお薦めします。
