７４年発表、エリック・クラプトンのソロ最高傑作『461オーシャン・ブールヴァード』
プライベートに起こった様々な問題やドラッグ依存症により、長い隠遁生活を余儀なくされ、『いとしのレイラ』から３年の月日を経て発表した作品。

ギター・リフと不規則なドラムが曲をリードする「マザーレス・チルドレン」。
オルガンとアコースティック・ギターがレイド・バックな雰囲気を醸し出す「ギヴ・ミー・ストレングス」。
イヴォンヌ・エリマンとのデュエット曲「ゲット・レディ」。
穏やかなアコースティック・ギターとクラプトンのささやくような歌声が心地よい「プリーズ・ビー・ウィズ・ミー」。
ハードなギター・リフが躍動感溢れる「メインライン・フロリダ」。

ハイライトとなるのは「アイ・ショット・ザ・シェリフ」と「レット・イット・グロウ」の２曲。
まず、前者はボブ・マーリーのカバー曲です。ただヒットしただけではなく、世界中のロック・ファンにレゲエを広める結果にも結びつきました。
そして、「レット・イット・グロウ」。この曲はクラプトンの数あるバラードでも最高の部類に入る名曲です。ギターの美しい音色と、ドラマティックな展開は何度聴いても感動的です。

テクニックを誇示するような派手な即興プレイはありませんが、気負うことなくボーカルを取る姿は、
クラプトンがバンドのギタリストから、ソロ・アーティストへと変貌を遂げたことを感じさせます。
また、それを支えるバックのメンバーの演奏やコーラスも絶妙です。全体的にリラックスした雰囲気を感じるアルバムですが、
「ゲット・レディ」や「アイ・キャント・ホールド・アウト」など、良い意味での緊張感も漂っています。

ライヴとボーナス・トラック付きのデラックス・エディションも出てるので、そちらもお薦めですが、名盤の称号を勝ち取ったのは紛れも無くこの１０曲です。
初めて聴かれる方にはＣＤ１枚組の本作をおすすめします。

ソロとしては第二作目。キャリアで最高の出来と言える、充実した楽曲と異常なほどの緊張感がみなぎっていたデレク・アンド・ドミノスの次の作品に当るのですが、それに反比例するかのようなリラックスした雰囲気の演奏が聞かれるアルバムです。しかしながら曲はかなり良い曲が揃っていますし、テンションの高い演奏を求めると少々違いますが、演奏そのものも良く、アルバムの出来も文句の付けようもない代表作の一つと言えるものに仕上がっています。このアルバムで、毎度語られるは、ボブ・マーリーの I shot The Sheriff のカヴァーですが、このレゲエの持ったリラックス感のようなものをアルバム全体で通したような感じになっていますので、この曲がアルバムのキー曲になっているのは間違いないでしょう。名曲中の名曲、Let it Grow は、ジョン・レノンのようなコード進行が印象的な曲。これはデレク・・をちょっと引きずっている印象です。

アイ・ショット・ザ・シェリフだけじゃないんだよ、このアルバムには他にもレゲエ調な楽曲があるし気怠さと世捨て人的なフィーリングと愛があるクラプトンのレゲエアルバムと言っていい。最初と最後のロック節は必要なし、もっとマッタリした曲にしていたなら完璧でしたね。
