スノー・パトロールはしょっちゅうコールドプレイと比較されるのだが、見当違いじゃないだろうか。スノー・パトロールは、もっとずっといい歌を書くし、そう自己嫌悪している風にも見えないし、しかも金持ちにも見えない。彼らの幸せにさせてくれる気難しいポップソング達は、物事のメランコリックな側面に触れがちだが、歌詞は生活の一場面を切り取った描写で素晴らしい。シンガーであり作詞家であるギャリー・ライトボディが、パンチのきいたOpen Your Eyesを歌いながら、スフィアン・スティーヴンズに「The anger swells in my guts.(怒りが俺の腹の中でふくらんでいる)」と叫ぶ。多分、コールドプレイよりは、アメリカのインディー・ロックのバンド、セバドーの方が比較の対象としてより近いんじゃないだろうか?とにかく、このバンドにはいつも驚かされる。彼らの待ちに待ったブレークアウト第3作目のアルバムFinal Strawを聴いたあとで、このスコットランド人とアイルランド人のバンドのツアーにでかけたら、彼らの巨大なロックの壁につきあたって、あれ?と思うかもしれない。Eyes Openはさらにロックに突き進んだレコードであり、これはプロデューサーのギャレット・リーに大いに負うものだが、かれらのベストなアルバムだ。人間関係で気がめいることなどあって、とりあえず近所にドライブに出かけるときなどに迷路に入るには最適の一枚である。
