1982 年にリリースされたビリー・ジョエル 9 枚目のアルバム。

このアルバムの一般的な評価はあまり芳しいものではありません。いわく「重い」、「暗い」、「考え過ぎ」・・・。
でも私はこのアルバム、そんなに嫌いではありません。特に前半（昔でいうＡ面）はシングル・カットされ
た <1>「Allentown」、<3>「Pressure」 をはじめとして佳作が並びます。恐らく後半で停滞ムードに陥る
のがアルバム全体を通しての評価に影響しているのかな〜と思ったりも。
また、もしかしたら僕達は「悩めるアメリカ」に対峙するのはビリーの役割じゃない、（そんな暇があった
らこれまでのようにシビレるナンバーをどんどん作ってくれ）、と勝手に思っていたのかもしれませんね。

少なくとも当時このアルバムを聴いて、「次作はもう（買わなくて）いいや」とは決して思わなかったし、
今でもたまに聴き返すことがある（ただ前半のみの場合が多いけど(笑+泣)）ので、決して駄作のレッテル
を貼ってオシマイ、とはしたくない一枚です。

B.ジョエル・ファンの間でも賛否が分かれた異色作としても記憶に残る'82年作品。当時高校生だった私には、余りにポップスでないB.ジョエル作品に面食らった事を覚えています。
今までN.Y.の詩人的な作品で、都市やそこで生活する人々、その生活における様々な側面(怒りや恋愛など)を極上のメロディ・センスで歌い上げてきたB.ジョエルが、面と向かってベトナム戦争の賛否について切り込んだ[4]が余りにも重いと思われて仕方がありませんでした。
がしかし、私個人の中でそれ自体がB.ジョエルに対する評価を低いものにする要因にはなり得ませんでした。後年、B.ジョエル自身は兵役を回避した過去から、この曲をリリースする事に悩んでいたという事を知り、また、その事を越えて自らの声で米国の過去を世に問うたその姿勢には純粋に拍手を送りたい気持です。
また、工業都市における斜陽を切実に見据えた[1]も、ある意味(社会的なメッセージ色が強いという点で)同系に捉えられる曲なのかも知れません。
余りにも[1]、[4]が浮いたような感じになってしまい、(それまでの)B.ジョエルのイメージで捉えると、必ずしも成功作ではなかったのかも知れません。
その反動か(またはレコード会社の指示なのか)、次作"イノセントマン"では同じくP.ラモーンがプロデュースしていますが、本作は対極に位置するようなポップ色の強いものになっています。

評判通り、この『ナイロンカーテン』は確かに後期ビートルズの影響が出ています。（Ｍ−２とＭ−６〜９）

ビリージョエルをリアルタイムで聴いてきた人達にとっては、メッセージ性の強いＭ−１やＭ−４が「暗くて重い」と敬遠される向きもありますが、私は物心付いた時に日米貿易摩擦を見てきたので、それを彷彿とさせる「アレンタウン」（実際は72年制作）を聴くと思わず心のどこかで「ザマーみろ！」と喝采を覚えてしまいます。「グッドナイト・サイゴン」も現在のイラク・アフガニスタン戦争（二正面作戦）で深入りする米国に状況を重ね合わせて聴くと、感慨深いものがあります。もちろん、Ｍ−１もＭ−４も曲自体の出来は素晴らしく、歌詞のメセージ性にも惹かれますが。他にもＭ−５やジョージ・ハリスン風のＭ−７あたりもいい味出しています。最初にレンタルで80年代の原盤を聴いた時より、このリマスター盤の方がＭ−４のＡメロ・Ｂメロ、Ｍ−９の「アレンタウン」のリピート（引用）が良く聴こえるし、気のせいか原盤よりも竜頭蛇尾感が少し和らいでる感もあるので、その点でもお勧めです。でも、鉄とコークスをイメージしたＭ−１の口ベースにはしびれますね。
