76年作品。グレッグ・ウォーカーを新ヴォーカリストに迎え、サンタナ本来のプリミティヴなラテンロックが復活!一方で非常に計算されたポップ性を備え持っており、当時のファンクミュージックへのサンタナなりのアプローチともいえる。なんといってもこのアルバムを象徴する哀愁のヨーロッパは大ヒット!この成功を機にサンタナの哀愁路線が確立される(哀愁のボレロ、哀愁の旅路など)。カルロスのスパニッシュ・ギターが聞ける「ジプシー仲間」も本作のハイライトの一つ。横尾忠則氏の芸術的アートワークも話題に。

この作品は前期の野獣的なサウンドと違ってサルサなどを意識し、洗練された楽曲が並んでいます。内容も美しいジャケットと同じく、美しいギターやコーラスなどにのせられつつもノリを失っていない、魅力的な傑作です。最新リマスターによって音のクオリティも格段に向上しました。

ラテンロックのヒーローであるサンタナがファンクの要素をふんだんに取り入れた1976年作品。
大ヒット作でもある本作は、かなりテクニカルな楽曲ながら、洗礼されたポップ性を兼ね備えている。しかし、楽曲自体が一般リスナーに媚びていないように聞こえるのは素晴らしい。

ギターが好きな人には、”哀愁のヨーロッパ”が収録されているのはこのアルバムです。
バンドもさることながらギターも非常にメリハリがあり、聴き応えありますよ。
