15年前のデビュー・アルバムでパール・ジャムが成功を勝ちとったとしたら、このシアトル出身の4人組は光り輝くためにその原点に本気で戻るべきだ。2002年以来となる、スタジオ録音アルバムとしては通算8枚目の作品で、バンドは9.11後、戦争で荒廃した世界で模索する最近の作品につきまとう緊急性と重要性が氾濫する中で、冒険的な実験を蓄積してみせた。「World Wide Suicide」でリード・ボーカルのエディ・ヴェダーは"人が作った地獄で代わり映えのしない毎日が続く/何が救える、誰が生き残って彼女を抱きしめられる?"と歌い、ブッシュ政権を侮辱する熱弁に加わっている。とは言っても、このアルバムの火花は政治的な面以外にある。「Life Wasted」、「Comatose」、「Big Wave」といった曲ではガレージ・ロックの過去を採用し、ギタリストのマイク・マクレディとストーン・ゴッサードは、10年前の初期衝動の明晰さをもって演奏しているし、ロック界のベスト・ドラマーのひとりに数えられるマット・キャメロンは、ヴェダーの磨き抜かれたボーカルに剥きだしのバック・ボーカルも加えている。だが、パール・ジャムは「Daughter」以来、もっとも優れた調和のある曲を生み出してもいる。「Marker in the Sand」ではラジオ受けしそうなコーラス、美しい旋律の「Parachutes」ではゴッサードの素晴らしいつま弾きがペースを作り、アージ・オーヴァーキルのパンチがある「Umemployable」では燃えるような語りがある。最後にヴェダーが恋人に戻ってくるように懇願する「Come Back」はキーボードが効いたラブソングで、最高にクールなゴッサードのソロで完璧な曲に仕上がっている。サム・クックに歌ってほしいような魂のこもった曲で、パール・ジャム復活を告げる輝きと自信を示すオリジナリティがある――世界を奪回する準備完了だ。

私の初めてのPEARL JAMがこの作品。ラジオで「WORLD〜」を聴いてすぐにCD屋に 駆け込んだ。
アグレッシブなロックだけでなく落ち着いた雰囲気の曲もあり、惚れてしまった。個人的に好きなのは 5曲目。メロディセンスのよさが感じられてよい。
その他の曲も個性的で捨て曲がなく退屈せずに聴き通せる。最近もっとも買って得した気分になった一枚。

PJの新作だけど、結論から言うと「Yield以来の快作」だと思います。

色々なアイディアを消化(且つ昇華)していると思いますね。

ネットで観たライブからは相変わらず魅力的な演奏をすることが分かったし、実際に新曲はライブで真価を発揮すると思いますよ。

毎回ながらのスルメアルバムです。今回のオフィシャルブートレグも期待できますね。

↑に１曲目のＰＶがある。
この曲が気に入ったのなら、ストレートな１−５、８は文句無し！
他の曲は、スローナンバーだったり、多少凝った構成の曲になるが、
それも悪くない。

↑ＰＶは、ヘッドホンを使うなりして、ちゃんとした音で聴いてほしい。
