LIL’DAP、THE NUTCRACKERの2MC、GROUP HOMEによる大傑作ファースト。
DJプレミアが全面プロデュースしていますが、彼の手がけた中でも最高の部類の作品です。
彼はよくビートへの拘りが半端ではないと言われます。勿論ドラムも素晴らしいのですが、
この作品ではそれ以上に上モノの美しさに魅了されます。
NASの"N.Y. STATE OF MIND"でもそうだったけれど、鍵盤の音の使い方が非常に巧み。
透明感と針の様な鋭さを併せ持つ美しさ。後のアブストラクト、エレクトロニカに通じる
スタイリッシュに洗練された音。メロディではなく、単音のループが多いだけになおさら
音が持つ力が増幅されている。
現在ANTICON一派など電子音楽を取り入れている人達がいますが、プレミアの作る音
は「黒く、そして同時に透明」だという点で彼らとは違うと感じます。
MCの二人が淡々と綴る、ストリートの美学がしっかり曲に反映されています。
スタイリッシュでありながらも、従来のヒップホップの持つ旨味を存分に味わえます。
90年代は数多くの名トラックメーカーが現れましたが、プレミアと同じ嗜好を持つ人は
なかなかいないかも。
