confessional告白的という形容詞は、フォークといえば、フォーク・ロックからフォーク・ポップまであらゆるフォークにしょっちゅう使われる。このフォーク・ポップというのが、Jewelのジャンルだ。フォーク全体を向うにまわしても、彼女の音楽はさらに裸で告白的である。(あまりに裸だという批判さえある。)ナッシュビルのプロ達のグループとともに彼女は1995年のPieces of Youの方向で新たな自分の内側への旅を繰り広げようと試みた。しかし結果に満足できず、このテキサスにベースをおくアーティストはロブ・カヴァロ(Green Day)ともう一度とり直しをした。このおかげで彼女の第6作となったアルバムには、期待通りのロックの色彩が加わったけれど、かといって彼女本来のものが失われたわけではない。いつもの彼女らしくないといえないこともない出だしの曲0304はダンス・ミュージックを思わせるといえなくもない。でも彼女はやっぱりポップ・スター(Fragile Heart)であり、センシティヴ・フォーキー(Fragile Heart)であり、断固としたカントリー・ガール(Stephenville, TX)なのだ。彼女のジョリ・ミッチェル風のソプラノは以前にも増して高く舞い上がり、ますますディランの冷笑的追っかけとなっている。何が変わったかというと、Jewelが成熟してきているということだ。彼女も30代に入り、初期の頃の彼女にはみられなかった広々としたパースペクティヴ(タイトルバックで彼女は「大人になるということは、なにも夢を見るのをやめることではない」と言っている。)とユーモアのセンスとが加わったという感じだ。例えば彼女が18の時に書いて、何度も刷新されたSatelliteで、彼女は、法王もロックンロールもValium(精神安定剤)もMiss Cleo(霊能者)も彼女の壊れたハートをなおすことはできないと言っているけれど、Jewelは、何年ものアップス・アンド・ダウンズを経た今、彼女はもう壊れていない、ただもっと自分らしくなっただけ、と言っている。

前作0304（2003年に出した4枚目のアルバム、という意味だったそう）では、「今までギターを弾き、歌い語っていたJewelがBriney！？」みたいな感じで、賛否両論があったJewel。
個人的にはあれも新しいJewelが見れて楽しかったし、Intuitionのビデオも好きでした。
でもがっかりした人がいるのも確か。
でもでもでも！
今作、Goodbye Alice In WonderlandではJewelらしい音楽が戻ってきた！
期待を裏切らない、Jewel定番のギターの音色。
ソフトな歌声。
でも昔のJewelではなく、新しいJewelスタイル。

Again And Againやタイトル曲なんかは正にJewelだけど、3rd・This Wayまでにあった、「どこまで行っても暗い」感は無い。
ちゃんと0304で手に入れたポップさや、弾け具合を活かしている。
しかも0304でも収録されていたFragile Heartを再収録。
今のスタイルでやるとこんな風になるんだと感動！
「批判されたアルバムの曲だって、悪くないんだから！」って言われてるみたい。

Jewel曰く最も自伝的な内容らしく、その通りで、どんな感情にしろ、きちんとJewelの言葉で表現されています。
今、自分の想いを歌できちんと表現できるシンガーがいない中、この作品は素晴らしく正直な作品。
そして良質な作品を作り上げた、新しいJewelに拍手！です。

なんとなくふと聴いて 微笑んでしまうような 優しくてほっとするアルバム。THIS WAYが一番すきだけど このアルバムの持つ穏やかさもまた絶妙

↑というのは、自伝的な曲“テキサス州スティーヴンヴィル”の中の一節ですが、本当に今のジュエルという人を表しているのだと思います。

フォーク路線のデビュー作品で注目を浴び、底力のある２作目で名曲「Hands」がテロに嘆くアメリカ人に支持され、３作目でロックを取り入れ最高傑作と言われながらも、４作目ではなぜか「ファンを裏切りダンスと流行に走った」ジュエルと捉えられていました。でも私には、その問題の４作目『０３０４』で最初に感じた違和感も、長くは続かなかった。

結局、ジュエルという人は、ものすごく研究熱心な人で、それは何故かというなら音楽を心から愛しているから、という言葉に尽きるのでしょう。リスナーの側にしてみれば、「ロックも聴くし、ジャズもクラシックも、たまにはダンスも聴く」なんていう人はざらにいる、それをただジュエルはアーティストとして体現している。そんな貪欲な超吸収体とでも言うべき能力を遺憾なく発揮しちゃったのが『０３０４』であり、なんていうか…ジュエルの懐の深さにリスナーがついていけなかった、というか。

ヴォーカル・スタイルの研究にも益々磨きがかかり、今回はボブ・ディランやジョニ・ミッチェルを彷彿とさせる曲もありました。そうして全てを飲み込んで、また「ええ、私ディランもマドンナも好きよ」って、曲を吐き出す。他人から受けた影響を臆せず正直に表せるのは、何より自らがしっかりと在るからです。しかし独りよがりに陥らず、他人の意見を取り入れることによって、『This Way』のボーナス・トラックだった“Long Slow Slide”は、素晴らしく完成された訴える力のある曲へと、仕上がっています。

先入観を持たず、ただ、聴くこと。ジュエルのリスナーに必要なのは、多分それだけです。
