まず、はじめにジャケットを見て、「Welcome to Hell」を彷彿とさせ。タイトルは名盤「Black Metal」をまさしく、逆にしただけの「Metal　Black」(笑)この、バカバカしさが、すでに、VENOM復活を彷彿させている。メンバーは、クロノス以外はマンカス(G)、アントン(Dr)というメンバー、これまた、オリジナルを思い出す・・・ようである。しかし、資料によるとギターのマンカスはセッションプレイヤーらしく、CATHEDRAL初来日時には、ベーシストとして、またCARCASS初来日時の際は脱退したマイケル・アモットの代役としてギターをプレイしていた人なので、全体的にVENOMがまともなサウンドになったという感も歪めなくもない。
ジャケットと、タイトルは原点に、サウンドは上手くなったという・・・・
さらに、最後に収録されている。「Metal Black」はMATALLICAでいうところのMETAL MILLTIAと思えばよい。

若い人にはウケないでしょうね。今やこれよりうるさい、速い、下品なバンドっていくらでもいますから。かつてのアングラ帝王の座は、完全に若手に取って替わられてるでしょう。しかし、80年代初めにこんな音楽をやってたバンドは他に居なかったワケで、リアルタイムで聴いた人間、そのインパクトに圧倒された者としてはこれ以上ないアルバムです。コレといった山場もない駄曲があったりするのもまた嬉しかったりするワケで。
そしてラストのアルバムタイトル曲。昇天します。どうでもいいような歌詞、ベースの陰に引っ込んだギター、ドタバタしたドラム、全てがVenomです。
いろいろ耳の肥えたHMファンや初心者には『？』かも知れませんが、リアルタイムでVenomの凄味を経験した人には絶対の作品。

ブラックメタルはヴェノムから始まり、悪魔的なイメージを重いメタルサウンドで表現し続けてきた彼らの作品は今回も凄い。前作『リザレクション』の勢いも冷めやらないまま一曲目から過激に、破壊的に始まるこのアルバム、『メタル・ブラック』は期待通りの出来になっている。
