　この作品は、黒沢明監督が、若い頃に読んで感銘を受けたアルセーニェフの紀行文『デルス・ウザーラ』を、黒澤監督が、１９７０年代にソ連で映画化した作品である。
　黒澤監督は、若い頃に読んだこの本（『デルス・ウザーラ』）を永年に渡って映画化することを夢見て居た。そして、１９７０年代にソ連から「一本撮らないか？」と提案された際、黒澤監督が、「『デルス・ウザーラ』を撮りたい。」と言った処、ソ連側は、「『デルス・ウザーラ』を知って居るのか。」と、大変驚いたと言ふ逸話が残って居る。当時のソ連が、「芸術上の問題は１００％黒澤監督に任せる。」と言って、この作品を制作費無制限で黒澤監督に撮らせた事は驚きであるが、これは、当時のソ連において、黒沢明監督が、イデオロギーを超えて、いかに高く評価されて居たかの反映であろう。
　私は、この映画が大好きである。特に、アルセーニェフとデルスが、鉄道の上で別れ、もう一度お互いを振り返って、遠くから名を呼び合ふ場面は、黒澤作品の全ての場面の中でも、屈指の名場面だと思ふ。（見る度に涙が出る。）夕日の場面を始めとする、息を呑む様な美しい場面の数々、そして、イサク・シュワルツの音楽も大好きである。
　この映画が公開された時、少なからぬ批評家が、黒澤監督に対する反感からであろう。この作品を酷評した事が忘れられない。黒澤監督をけなす事が「進んで居る」事の証明だと信じて疑はなかった当時の映画評論家達を、私は、軽蔑する。

黒澤明の本当の魅力は娯楽作品にこそあると思う。
「生きる」や「赤ひげ」のようなシリアスな作品の良さも認めるが、
個人的には説教臭さが鼻について好きではない。
だが、この「デルス・ウザーラ」だけは別格。
映像の美しさはハンパではないのだ。

ラッキーなことに劇場で見ることが出来たので特に印象に残っているかもしれないが、
風景の描写の美しさに、ここまでこだわった映画も他にないだろう。
何も語ることなくシベリアの自然を長時間撮ったシーンが多いが、
単に「綺麗」と言うだけでなく、
自然が持つ恐ろしさまで映像からひしひしと伝わってくる。

物語の元々の原作は、探検隊の隊長を主人公にしたものだが、
映画では先住民デルスを主人公に変えたものだと一般には言われている。
私の解釈はさらに異なっていて、
黒澤の意図は「シベリアの自然」を主人公にしたかったのではないか。
だから登場人物が喋る台詞が極端に少なく、
そのために黒澤の他のシリアスな作品で気になる説教臭さがないのも魅力だ。

最近、黒澤映画をリマスタして普及価格で再発売され始めているが、
非常に残念なことに、このデルス・ウザーラの再発売は予定されていない。

ちなみに私にとっての黒澤映画ベスト５は、
七人の侍
隠し砦の三悪人
椿三十郎
天国と地獄
デルス・ウザーラ
デルス以外は全て普及版が再発売されているのだが。

普及版の発売の期待を込めて星4つ。
普及版が出ればもちろん5つ。

思ったより画質が良くないと思っているのは私だけか？ぜひ海外で発売されているものと比較してみたい。
音声は5.1チャンネルリミックスでクリアになっていて良い。
